20 Iconic Things You Must Do In Las Vegas (For First Timers & Vets!)

Las Vegas is one of the world’s most iconic destinations, known for its over-the-top entertainment, nightlife, and nonstop energy. With so much happening at any given moment, it’s no surprise that Vegas remains a favorite for birthdays, bachelorette trips, and quick weekend getaways.

But with endless options, planning your time here can feel overwhelming — especially if it’s your first visit. I’ve been coming to Las Vegas for over a decade, starting shortly after turning 21 and continuing into my 30s, and over the years I’ve experienced many of the city’s classic “must-do” moments.

Whether this is your first trip or your fifth, here are the most iconic things to do in Las Vegas — the experiences that truly define the city.

Top Things You Must Do In Las Vegas (For First Timers & Vets)

Bellagio Fountains

Without a doubt, one of the most quintessential things to do in Vegas is to see the Bellagio Fountains.

It’s easy to understand why the show is so popular. The huge fountains are synchronized to music and lights, putting on a dazzling display.

The large-scale choreographed water show takes place in front of the Bellagio Hotel & Casino, right off the Strip, and lasts for 4 minutes. Shows are every 15 – 30 minutes (depending on time of day), and free to anyone. 

Shop (Or Window Shop!)

Vegas has become well known for its fantastic shopping. 

On the Strip you’ll find a mix of designer brands, small boutiques for varying budgets, and of course, souvenir shops.

It’s easy to drop a pretty penny here. Although if you’re on a budget, no worries, window shopping is a very common practice.

Some of the most popular places to shop on the Strip are:

• The Grand Canal Shoppes At Venetian
• Wynn Plaza Shops
• The Forum Shops at Caesars
• Showcase Mall (this is where you’ll find the famous M&M store and Coca-Cola store, plus many other big names)

Walk The Strip

First timers in Vegas must walk the Strip — this is where you’ll find the densest concentration of Vegas’ world-famous casino hotels.

Colorful lights, massive resorts with elaborate themes, and crowds of gawking visitors mingled with street performers are what you can expect here.

Describing it hardly does justice, it’s something you have to experience for yourself.

The Strip stretches just over 4 miles along Las Vegas Boulevard South. It starts at the “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign and extends to the Stratosphere Tower in the north.

The most famous stretch runs (roughly) from Excalibur to The Venetian.

It’s worth walking the Strip both during the day and at night. It’s a very different experience each time.

Daytime is a bit more family-friendly than nighttime, but seeing the Strip all lit up after dark is pretty incredible.

Tip: Be sure to wear comfortable shoes when walking the Strip!

Explore The Casinos & Hotel Lobbies

Exploring the hotel casinos is a must for Las Vegas first timers. Vegas hotels are far from average, many boast opulent lobbies, huge casinos, and crazy themes.  

My first time in Vegas we walked through hotels such as the Bellagio, Venetian, Cosmopolitan, and New York – New York.

I was blown away by each hotel’s spectacular features, especially the variety, no two hotels are the same.

You could easily walk for hours and barely scratch the surface. 

Some of the most famous hotels to walk through in Las Vegas are:

• Cosmopolitan
• Venetian
• Luxor
• Paris Las Vegas
• Bellagio
• New York – New York
• Planet Hollywood
• Caesars Palace

To be clear, you don’t have to stay at one of these hotels to enter. The lobbies and casinos are open to all visitors.

However, those under 21 years old can only walk through casinos. You cannot stand and watch games, even accompanied by an adult.

These hotels are huge, so it’s possible to explore their lobbies and shopping malls while avoiding casinos.

Gamble In Las Vegas

Casinos played a major role in making Las Vegas a household name, and gaming is still the main draw today. 

You’ll find a huge variety of table games and slot machines, even tournaments and sports betting rooms. 

My first time in Vegas I enjoyed trying out the fun variety of slots, putting a few dollars down on roulette, and sports betting.

So if you’re up for some gambling, put it all on red, go for the jackpot, or try your hand at blackjack. You may not win, but you’re sure to have a good time!

No doubt, this is one of the best things to do in Las Vegas for first timers!

Tips For Gambling In Vegas:

• There are rules and etiquette to follow at table games, for example, no phones out.
• It’s customary to tip table dealers.
• Drinks are free while gambling, be sure to tip the cocktail waitress.
• Each hotel has a rewards program, they’re free to sign up and great for freebies. 
• Only bring as much money as you’re comfortable losing.
• Don’t bring your ATM card to the casino floor. Heck, I don’t even bring it to Vegas.
• Have fun and be respectful of others around you.

If you’re learning to gamble, it’s a good idea to try your hand somewhere cheap while you learn the ropes.

A few of my favorite casinos for (relatively) cheap gambling on the Strip are: Flamingo, LINQ, Cromwell, Harrah’s, Treasure Island, and New York – New York.

Additionally, the Fremont Street area and casinos just off the Strip will have less expensive gambling.

See The Sphere

The Sphere is a must-see during your trip to Vegas, it’s easily one of the most futuristic, over-the-top additions to the skyline in years.

Even if you don’t go inside, watching the exterior LED screen light up at night is an experience in itself. It’s visible from various points along the Strip, but I loved the view of it from the High Roller Observation Wheel.

If you do go in, it’s an immersive, multi-sensory experience that feels more like stepping into another world than simply watching a screen. Whether attending a concert, live show, or movie, it’s next-level and genuinely different from anything else on the Strip.

Attend A Las Vegas Pool Party 

Ah, Las Vegas pool parties. They’re among the best in the world. 

Pool parties here are far from average, think nightclub — poolside. Bottle service is the norm, cabanas cost an exorbitant amount, women are in heels (yes, heels by the pool), and the party doesn’t stop for hours. 

Some of the top pool parties and day clubs in Vegas are: Marquee Dayclub, Encore Beach Club, Wet Republic, Drai’s Beach Club, and TAO Beach Club… among others! 

These are the top dogs in terms of actual pool parties, but there are plenty of pools which are really fun and not nearly as rowdy. 

Personally, I enjoy lounging at the pool of whichever hotel I’m staying at. My favorite pools for chilling out? Mandalay Bay, Paris, and Circa. 

Catch A Show

High quality live entertainment is another reason Vegas is so famous.

Some of the world’s top performers are based in Las Vegas. You can find magic shows, burlesque, circus arts, comedy, live music, or dance.

There’s an incredible variety of talent here. 

Tickets for the most popular shows can be expensive, but it’s well worth the experience at least once.

Looking for live music? Vegas hosts some incredible residencies.

Residencies are when a world-famous musical artist performs a series of shows only in one city. Sometimes they stay for weeks, sometimes a year plus. 

Famous Vegas residencies, both past and present, include:

• Blake Shelton
• Janet Jackson
• Barry Manilow 
• Eagles
• Keith Urban
• Garth Brooks
• Maroon 5

Again, these are just a small handful of the many household names. 

Helicopter Ride Over The Strip 

Always wanted to see the Strip from above? For those willing to splurge, a helicopter ride over the Strip is a must!

The vast Nevada desert surrounding the Strip’s vibrant, towering hotels is simply gorgeous.

It’s safe to say, witnessing the Las Vegas skyline at night is something you won’t be soon to forget.

There are many reputable tour companies. Those wishing to fly during sunset or at night need to book at least a few days in advance. Most tours include hotel pick up.

Rides are quick, so this excursion may not be quite as expensive as you imagine.

Take A Photo Of The Las Vegas Sign 

A fun thing to do among Vegas first timers is to take a photo at the famous “Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas” sign. 

This sign sits at the south end of the Strip, welcoming visitors to Vegas.

It’s large and makes for a great backdrop. However, the area gets really busy, expect to wait in line for a photo. 

I’d recommend doing this one early in the morning to avoid large crowds. 

Over Indulge At A Buffet 

I’m not sure what it is with casinos and buffets, but they all seem to have one. And like everything else in Sin City, these buffets are far from average. 

There’s a dizzying amount of food available in huge varieties.

Expect made-to-order options, live-action cooking stations, and stations overflowing with delicious options.

Some buffets, of course, are better than others. Some stand outs include the buffets at the Bellagio, Caesars Palace, The Wynn, Cosmopolitan, and MGM Grand.

Keep in mind, lines to enter the buffet can be extremely long. If you can, eat a bit outside of normal hours, otherwise plan to wait. 

Additionally, check out what each buffet is known for, some are famous for brunch, others dinner, etc. 

Note: The pandemic hit the Vegas buffet scene particularly hard, many favorites have still yet to reopen, but hopefully will eventually. It’s yet to be determined if this Vegas “must” is on it’s way out or will eventually return to its former glory.

The High Roller Observation Wheel & LINQ Promenade

One of the most fun things to do in Las Vegas, especially among first time visitors, is to ride the High Roller. 

The High Roller is North America’s tallest observation wheel (and the world’s second tallest) located on the LINQ Promenade, just steps from the Strip.

Observation wheels are essentially gigantic ferris wheels adorned with large pods rather than simple, outdoor seats. 

Pods fit 40 guests and are equipped with huge glass windows, some even have bars.

One “ride” takes 30 minutes, the wheel moves at a very slow and comfortable pace.

The High Roller offers excellent views of the Las Vegas skyline and surrounding desert.

Sunset and nighttime tours are most loved. Riding during these times will be more expensive, and should be booked in advance.

Be sure to check out their Happy Half Hour deal, which includes unlimited alcohol during the duration of your excursion.

Whether or not you book a ride, at least check out the LINQ Promenade. 

The promenade has excellent views of the observation wheel, in addition to shops, restaurants and bars… Even ziplining! It’s a lovely area to hang out. 

People Watch

You could spend hours camped out people watching, either at a hotel or on the Strip. The visitors of Las Vegas are fascinating. 

Of course, there’s street performers and obvious entertainment. But I enjoy simply watching the everyday people go by.

Vegas sees around 30 million visitors a year, placing it among the most visited cities in the United States.

Within that 30 million, you’ll find people of all ages, from all around the world, and with widely different backgrounds. 

It’s really delightful to sit back and watch everyone intermingle.  

Fremont Street / Downtown Las Vegas 

Another much loved activity for first time visitors is Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas! 

This is one of the oldest streets in Las Vegas, sometimes referred to as “The Old Strip.” It was the original center of gambling and entertainment back in the 1920’s.

The focal point of Fremont Street is the Fremont Street Experience, a 5 block pedestrian mall jam-packed with casinos and bars. It features entertainment like a massive LED light and sound show and ziplining above the walkway.

A few iconic hotels in the area are The Golden Nugget, Circa Hotel & Casino, Binion’s Gambling Hall, and Four Queens. Gambling here is less expensive than the Strip, but the casinos are smaller and can feel very crowded.

Tip: If visiting during the day, check out one of Downtown’s popular museums, like the Neon Museum or Mob Museum.

This is one of the few items on this list located off Strip. But trust me, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Fremont Street and the Downtown area do a great job showcasing the city’s nostalgic charm and historic roots. It’s a must see in Vegas for first timers!

Gondola Ride At The Venetian 

Ever daydreamed about a gondola ride through the famous canals of Venice, Italy?

Well, how about a gondola ride through a Venice-themed hotel in the United States instead? … It’s quirky, yes. But it’s extremely popular among visitors.

There are two ride options at The Venetian: indoor or outdoor.

Indoor rides take place within the hotel’s Grand Canal Shoppes, where the canals wind through the mall.

Outdoor rides take place on the hotel’s exterior waterways, offering a view of the Las Vegas Strip.

The gondolas are modeled after traditional Venetian gondolas, and the gondoliers don customary striped shirts and straw hats.

Whether or not you book a ride, it’s really fun to visit The Venetian and watch gondola-goers wind through the Venice-inspired decor.

Visit A Museum Or Go For An Excursion

While Vegas may be famous for gambling and nightlife, and understandably so, it’s a far cry from all the city has to offer.

Vegas loves providing entertainment options for all tastes.

Whether you’re an art-enthusiast, adrenaline junkie, or something in between, Vegas is for you.

Some popular museums, art displays, and excursions in Vegas include:

• Mob Museum
• Area 15 & Meow Wolf Omega Mart – Immersive art and entertainment district.

Spa Day 

With all the Vegas madness, you’ll be craving some rest and relaxation during your visit.

Luckily, there’s plenty of world-class spas on the Strip.

Spend a relaxing afternoon (or full day) pampering yourself with massages, full body wraps, facials, or sauna time.

There are many great spas to choose from, among the top in Vegas are:

Go For A Nice Dinner 

Something you must add to your first time in Vegas checklist? A fancy dinner.

Foodies will have no problem finding a place to chow down here, especially those looking for an upscale restaurant. Las Vegas is a hub for fine dining, after all.

Here you can find Michelin-star restaurants, James Beard awards, and a dizzying number of celebrity chef restaurants.

Try to go for at least one nice dinner during your stay, and follow up with a fancy cocktail or two.

Don’t forget reservations!

Get Bottle Service At A Club

If you’ve come to Sin City for the party, bottle service at a club is a must-consideration.

Extravagant clubs with celebrity DJs, light shows, and massive crowds are the regular here.

These are among the most prestigious nightclubs in the United States, after all.

Be warned, the price tag might shock you, but individual drinks and cover charge alone are very expensive. Bottle service will save you over the night and gets you in the club without standing in crazy lines. 

Go For A Day Trip From Las Vegas

The area surrounding Las Vegas is teeming with beauty.

Once off the Strip you’ll find national parks, state parks, wineries, ghost towns, and more. If time permits, I highly recommend a day trip from Las Vegas.

There are rental car companies at most major hotel resorts, this is best for those who want to explore on their own.

Otherwise, join a tour and have a local guide handle the logistics for you.

Iconic Hotels To Stay At For Your First Time Visiting Las Vegas

For first time Las Vegas visitors, I recommend staying somewhere central.

Lodging on the Strip is ideal, the area has a huge concentration of attractions.

You may be tempted to stay just off the Strip, but know getting on and off the Strip is very time consuming.

The most famous stretch of the Las Vegas Strip runs (roughly) from Excalibur to The Venetian. Just about any hotel within this range will be great for first time visitors.

Some Las Vegas hotels to consider for your first visit include: 

• Caesars Palace Hotel & Casino
• The Cosmopolitan Resort & Casino
• Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino
• New York – New York Hotel & Casino
• MGM Grand Resort & Casino
• The Venetian Resort & Casino
• The Flamingo Hotel & Casino

If it’s not in your budget, don’t feel pressured to stay at one of the expensive resorts.

You can find great rates at many centrally located hotels on the Strip. And, as I mentioned previously, hotel resorts are open to the public. This means anyone can go in the casinos and resorts, regardless if they’re staying at the hotel.

Tips For Your First Time In Las Vegas

Below are a few additional tips for your first time in Las Vegas:

• Everything is further away than it seems. The casino next door could easily take 20 minutes to get to, whether walking or in a cab.
• Speaking of cabs, cabs and ride shares are everywhere. They’re incredibly efficient and relatively affordable. Of course, there’s nothing they can do about traffic on the Strip, but rest assured, you can quickly access a ride here.
• There is also public transportation. The Monorail is a great way to get between hotels.
• Bring comfortable shoes and plan for a lot of walking. Even if utilizing ride share and public transit.
• If you take a photo of street performers, you are expected to tip.
• If anyone tries to sell you something on the Strip, ignore them.
• Public drinking is allowed in Vegas. Meaning you can exit the casino with a beer and cruise the Strip, drink in hand. Glass, however, is strictly prohibited on the Strip. Common sense is encouraged.
• Stock up on water, beverages, and snacks from CVS or Walgreens. You’ll find various locations throughout the Strip.
• Carry your ID with you everywhere. I’m a spritely 36 and ID’ed often in Vegas casinos and bars.
• Vegas is loud and crowded, pack your patience.
• Be safe, have an open mind, trust your gut, have fun!
