Fun Things To Do In Caye Caulker, Belize

Planning a trip to Caye Caulker and wondering what there is to do? This small Caribbean island off the coast of Belize is known for its laid-back atmosphere and easygoing pace of life. While it’s absolutely the kind of place where doing nothing is part of the appeal, there’s also plenty to fill your days — from snorkeling the Belize Barrier Reef and sunset cruises to waterfront bars and low-key island adventures.

When you arrive, you’ll quickly notice that most “activities” here come with a relaxed twist. Think sandy streets lined with palm trees, bikes and golf carts instead of cars, colorful wooden buildings, and plenty of time built into the day to slow down and enjoy the surroundings.

The island’s unofficial motto is “Go Slow,” and it naturally shapes how you experience everything on this list — mornings start easy, afternoons stretch long, and even the most popular spots never feel rushed in the same way they might on larger islands.

Below are the best things to do in Caye Caulker to help you make the most of your time on the island.

The Best Things To Do In Caye Caulker, Belize

Snorkel The Belize Barrier Reef

Caye Caulker sits just offshore from the Belize Barrier Reef, the second-largest reef system in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to more than 500 known fish species (and plenty still being studied), this reef is one of the biggest reasons travelers come to the island — and you may even spot a manatee if you’re lucky.

Snorkeling here is typically a full-day excursion and requires booking through a tour operator. Ragga Sailing Adventures (formerly Raggamuffin Tours) is the most popular company on the island and the one I personally used. We booked their Hol Chan Marine Reserve snorkel tour, and one thing I appreciated is that they do not feed the marine life — something that unfortunately still happens with some operators in Belize.

No matter who you book through though, this is easily one of the most popular things to do when visiting Caye Caulker.

Fun fact: The Belize Barrier Reef stretches roughly 185 miles along the country’s coastline, making it the second-largest reef system in the world (Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is the largest).

Dive The Great Blue Hole

The Great Blue Hole is one of the most famous dive sites in the world — and for good reason. This massive underwater sinkhole sits within the Belize Barrier Reef and is so large it’s visible from space. It’s known for dramatic depth changes, limestone formations, and the chance to see reef sharks, making it best suited for experienced scuba divers.

There are a few scuba diving operators on Caye Caulker such as Frenchie’s Diving Services or Blue Wave Divers, and many divers also book trips through companies in nearby San Pedro on Ambergris Caye if availability is limited.

If diving isn’t your thing, you can still experience the Blue Hole from above on a scenic helicopter tour. While snorkeling trips are sometimes offered, they aren’t generally recommended — it’s difficult to fully appreciate the scale and structure of the sinkhole from the surface.

Relax At The Split

The Split is the social hub of Caye Caulker and one of the island’s most popular hangout spots. This narrow channel was originally created by Hurricane Hattie in 1961 and later widened by storms and erosion, physically separating the island into two sections. Today, the calm, shallow water here makes it ideal for swimming, floating, and spending an easy afternoon in the sun.

Grab a bucket of Belikin beers from The Lazy Lizard — the iconic open-air bar right on the water — and settle in with Caribbean Sea views and laid-back reggae playing in the background. It’s easy to lose track of time here, and for many visitors, this ends up being the most relaxed part of their trip and a favorite thing to do in Caye Caulker.

Rent Bikes & Explore The Island

Caye Caulker is small, flat, and easy to explore by bike, making two wheels the most popular way to get around. While golf carts do exist, much of the island remains car-free, and biking lets you move easily between beaches, food spots, and quiet residential areas. It’s also a great way to see the island’s colorful wooden houses and local neighborhoods beyond the main tourist strip.

Many hotels and hostels offer complimentary bikes or low-cost rentals, and there are several rental shops around town where you can grab one for just a few dollars per day.

Tip: Golf carts are another option if needed. Daily rentals usually start around $40–$60 USD depending on season and demand.

Caye Caulker Forest Reserve

The Caye Caulker Forest Reserve protects roughly 100 acres at the northern end of the island and offers a quieter, more natural side of Caye Caulker. The area is primarily mangrove forest, which plays a major role in supporting marine life and coastal ecosystems. You may spot birds, small fish, crabs, and occasionally crocodiles in the surrounding waterways.

The reserve can be explored via the one-mile raised boardwalk or by kayak for a closer look at the mangrove channels. Guided tours are available through local operators like Richard’s Adventures if you want added context and wildlife insight.

Don’t forget bug spray — the mangroves can be mosquito-heavy, especially in the morning and evening.

Explore Caye Caulker’s Main Street 

Caye Caulker’s main street area is small but full of personality. Along the sandy roads and palm-lined walkways, you’ll find casual beach shacks, souvenir stalls, dive shops, and plenty of local restaurants serving fry jacks, fresh seafood, tacos, and jerk chicken. It’s the easiest place to wander, grab a bite, and get a feel for everyday island life.

This area is also where you’ll find many of the island’s most photogenic spots, with turquoise water views popping up around nearly every corner.

Tip: For plant-based travelers, solid vegan-friendly options include Paradiso Café, Ana’s Genie’s, and Namaste Café.

Caye Caulker Bars & Nightlife

Caye Caulker has a relaxed nightlife scene that leans social rather than flashy. During the day, most people gravitate toward waterfront spots like The Lazy Lizard, Northside Beach Club, and Iguana Reef Inn, where you can swim, drink, and watch the sunset.

At night, the island comes alive with casual beach bars, reggae music, and open-air dance floors. Popular evening spots include Barrier Reef Sports Bar & Grill and I&I Reggae Bar, both known for cheap drinks, good music, and a fun backpacker-friendly atmosphere.

Water Sports

For an active day on Caye Caulker, rent a paddleboard, kayak, kiteboard, or even an inner tube and spend some time out on the water (floating absolutely counts as a water sport in my book!). Since the island doesn’t have long stretches of sandy beach, most water activities happen around The Split, where calm conditions make it easy to jump in and cool off.

You’ll find rental stands right next to The Lazy Lizard, and many hotels and hostels also offer equipment rentals or can point you in the right direction. It’s one of the easiest ways to add some movement to an otherwise very relaxed island day.

Visit The North Island

Caye Caulker’s North Island is quieter, more rugged, and worth visiting if you want a break from the main village scene. The easiest way to get there is by taking the small ferry at The Split, which runs all day and costs just a few Belize dollars each way (bring small cash).

Once across, you’ll find fewer crowds, open shoreline, and a more undeveloped feel that’s great for walking, swimming, or grabbing a drink at one of the resort beach bars. It’s an easy half-day outing, especially if you want to see a different side of the island. Just note that services are limited over here, so bring water and anything else you might need.

Watch The Sunset From Iguana Reef Inn

The Pelican Bar at Iguana Reef Inn is one of the best sunset-viewing spots on Caye Caulker. Its large waterfront deck offers wide-open views of the Caribbean, making it a popular place to unwind at the end of the day.

Grab a cold beer or tropical cocktail and settle in — sunset here rarely disappoints.

Sunset Cruise

If you want to experience sunset from the water, booking a sunset cruise is a great option. These evening sails follow the coastline around Caye Caulker and offer panoramic views of the island and the Caribbean Sea as the sky changes color.

It’s a relaxed, social way to spend an evening and one of my favorite low-effort activities on the island. Several companies offer sunset cruises, with Wanderlust Sailing and Snorkeling and Good Vibes Tours both offering highly-rated options. Most tours include snacks and drinks, making it a fun night out to add to your itinerary.

Lobster Fest In Caye Caulker

Lobster Fest is Caye Caulker’s biggest annual celebration, marking the opening of Belize’s lobster season. Each year, visitors and locals gather for beach parties, live music, and endless lobster dishes prepared by restaurants and food vendors across the island.

The festival is usually held in late June and has been running since the mid-1990s. If your trip lines up with Lobster Fest, expect larger crowds — but also one of the liveliest weekends of the year on the island.

Day Trips From Caye Caulker

If you have extra time during your visit, consider adding a day trip from Caye Caulker to your itinerary. Mainland Belize and nearby cayes offer a completely different side of the country. Beyond the reef and Caribbean Sea, Belize is known for ancient Maya ruins, lush jungle landscapes, cave systems, and diverse wildlife.

As you can see there’s some great things to do in Caye Caulker. This was one of my favorite destinations during our 7-day visit to Belize, the laid back island life is unbeatable.
