27 Of The Best Things To Do In Sag Harbor, New York
The Hamptons’ most charming and laid-back spot is definitely the village of Sag Harbor. It’s often described as “family-friendly” or the “least ‘Hampton-y’ of the Hamptons.”
Either way, it’s clear the hamlet has managed to hold on to a distinctive charm amid regular Hamptons hoopla.
Established in the early 1700’s and located on the north end of Suffolk County’s South Fork, this one-time whaling port has a rich history evident still today.
I spent a year living in Sag Harbor, and regularly return to visit family. If you’re planning a visit and are unsure what to do, I’ve listed out some of my favorites below.

The Best Things To Do In Sag Harbor, New York
Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum
The Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum is dedicated to the whaling industry which shaped the town’s past. Sag Harbor was once one of the largest whaling ports in the United States. In fact, the town is even mentioned in Herman Melville’s famed book, Moby Dick.
Here you’ll find artifacts of the area’s history and the largest collection of whaling equipment in the state of New York.
The museum is located in a beautiful 1845 home once owned by whaling ship owner Benjamin Huntting II. It’s just steps from the Main Street area, making it very easy to visit.
Tip: If you enjoy museums and historical buildings, be sure to also check out the Sag Harbor Historical Society or the Custom House Museum. Both are located just steps from the Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum.
Check Out The Yachts From Long Wharf In Sag Harbor Yacht Yard
The calm waters of Sag Harbor Bay make for a great spot to dock boats.
Sag Harbor Yacht Yard was first established in 1797 as Rysam’s Boat Yard and originally served as a fishing and, you guessed it, whaling port. Today it’s more known for mega yachts and sailboats which can be spotted here all summer.
Long Wharf is centrally located in the village, just steps from lively restaurants and excellent boutique shops, making it one of the favorite things to do in Sag Harbor. It’s also a fantastic spot to watch the sunset!
While you can stroll the harbor any time of year, the boats are best from May through September.
Grab some ice cream from Big Olaf’s while you walk the waterfront. It’s cash only and the line gets long but it’s worth the wait!
Charter A Sailboat
Interested in chartering a boat yourself?
While visiting the east end of Long Island enjoy a catamaran, sailboat, or yacht with friends. You can choose between touring the area or simply doing a quick sunset cruise. No matter how you hit the water a boat ride is definitely one of the best things to do in Sag Harbor.
There are a number of charter options available through Sag Harbor Charters, American Beauty Cruises & Charters, and Sailacat.

Explore The Village Of Sag Harbor
One of the top things to do in Sag Harbor is to simply stroll Main Street and admire the historic buildings and homes.
The town has a picture-perfect Main Street adjacent to the waterfront. Imagine stylish boutique and antique shops mixed in with a supermarket, hardware store, and historic theater. Storefronts are lined with flowers and American flags, it’s all incredibly charming.
Historic Sites In Sag Harbor
Sag Harbor has a ton of beautiful historic buildings, most within walking distance of each other.
While browsing the village, be sure to check out:
- Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum
- Sag Harbor Old Jail House
- Broken Mast Monument
- Custom House
- Sag Harbor Library
- The Windmill
- The Old Whaler’s Church
Shop Main Street In Sag Harbor
While in the Village of Sag Harbor, many will find themselves shopping. Here, instead of designer brands, you’ll find more locally-owned and down to earth shops.
I particularly enjoy the women’s boutique shops and home decor stores in Sag Harbor.
Tip: If designer shopping is more your thing, head to the villages of East Hampton or Southampton. Both are just a few miles away and make for an easy day trip.

Additionally, keep an eye out for pop-up shops throughout Sag Harbor and the Hamptons. It’s common for big name brands to have summer-only shops throughout the area.
Vintage Shops & Antiquing
In general, the Hamptons are known for excellent antique shops, and Sag Harbor just so happens to be one of the best. I’m not talking musty hand-me-downs — think rare and lightly used instead. You never know what you’ll find here!
With a mix of clothing, accessories, furniture, and home decor available, shopping for vintage gems will keep you very busy in Sag Harbor!

Visit The Beach In Sag Harbor
Sag Harbor is located on the northern side of the South Fork, facing Noyack Bay. The beaches here are a bit rocky and are very calm compared to the nearby Atlantic coastline.
The town’s main beach is Long Beach (or Foster Memorial Beach). It’s on a thin strip of land alongside a roadway connecting Noyack to North Haven.
This beach is perfect for families. The calm, warm water is always popular for kids and adults alike.
Tip: For true sandy beaches (and waves) you’ll want to head to the Atlantic shore. Popular oceanfront beaches near Sag Harbor are Sagg Main Beach, Cooper’s Beach, or Ditch Plains Beach.
Note: Many Hamptons beaches are free and open to the public, but beach parking is not free. Parking rules and rates are regularly changing. Before heading out, check out Town of Southampton for up-to-date and accurate parking information. If planning to visit Coppers Beach, head over to Village of Southampton. Those without a car can walk, bike, or be dropped off at any public beach without needing a permit or paying a fee.
Kayak Or Stand Up Paddle Board
One of the best things to do in Sag Harbor is kayak or stand up paddle board. This activity is great thanks to persistently calm waters surrounding the area. It’s a great work out and also a wonderful way to see a quieter side of the Hamptons.

Sag Harbor Cinema
Sag Harbor Cinema is a beloved historic building in the heart of downtown Sag Harbor. Founded in 1920, it’s one of the oldest continuously run screens on Long Island.
The much-loved (and recently renovated) movie theater presents a mix of classics, documentaries, and new releases.
While you’re here be sure to buy some popcorn from Billy Joel’s popcorn machine. The machine was named after the famous singer thanks to his generous donations which, among others, helped restore the theater following a fire in December 2016.
Sag Harbor Cinema also has a rooftop bar called the Green Room. The modern terrace has excellent views of Sag Harbor Village and occasional live music. It’s definitely worth stopping by.
You can access the bar with your movie ticket or theater membership.
Bay Street Theater & Sag Harbor Center For The Arts
Prefer live shows? Bay Street is a local theater which hosts comedy, live music, theater performances, and events for the local community.
The theater has hosted productions by both established and up-and-coming artists, and has featured performers such as Alec Baldwin, Mercedes Ruehl, and Joy Behar.
In addition to regular programming, Bay Street Theater is also committed to providing educational opportunities for local students and artists. The theater offers a variety of classes and workshops throughout the year, as well as summer camps for children.

Sip Wine At Wölffer Estate Vineyard
Wölffer is the place to kick back and sip vino among the grapevines. Plan to spend an afternoon enjoying their summer rosé, live music, and charcuterie boards. This popular vineyard screams summer and is one of the most quintessential Hamptons experiences.
Wölffer offers a wide variety of wines, ciders (their dry rose cider is my favorite!), spirits, and even a few non-alcoholic wines.
Tasting and tour options need to be reserved in advance and can be arranged online.
On Friday and Saturdays throughout summer they host free live concerts during sunset at The Wine Stand at Wölffer Estate. The free event is always a good time and reservations are not required.

Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge
Just west of Sag Harbor Village is a peninsula turned 187-acre preserve, protecting coastline, salt marshes, and forest. These are diverse habitats which are essential for the area’s wildlife, especially beach-nesting birds.
Hike the 1.2 mile Wild Birds Nature Trail through woodland areas and onto the beach, or follow the beach for almost two miles along Jessup’s Neck Peninsula.
Visiting the Elizabeth A. Morton National Wildlife Refuge is just a few dollars per vehicle. The park is open daily from sunrise to sunset.

The Church Art Center
If you appreciate art, you’ll enjoy the many galleries throughout Main Street and the village.
The Church art center is especially worth seeing, it’s an exposition space, innovation center, and public garden founded by artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik.
In addition to exhibits, the gallery also hosts special events such as artist talks, film screenings, and more.
Exhibitions are free to all. The gallery does close between exhibits so keep an eye on their website before heading out: The Church – Sag Harbor.
Live Music At Faraway Sag Harbor (formerly Baron’s Cove)
Faraway Sag Harbor is popular for locals and visitors alike. This is thanks to the year-round live music, stunning views of the harbor, delicious cocktails, and overall lively crowd. This is one of the favorite things to do in Sag Harbor!
Be sure to get here early if you wish to snag a good seat.
Mashashimuet Park
Want to take a walk around the park? Let the kids run loose on a play ground? Hit the tennis court? Mashashimuet Park is the place to go. This is the town’s main park and a perfect place to find some space to yourself.
Mashashimuet Park is located about a mile from Sag Harbor Village, open sunrise to sunset, and free to all visitors.
Kidd Squid Brewing Company
Kidd Squid Brewing Company in Sag Harbor is a craft brewery located in the heart of the village.
The brewery offers a wide selection of craft beer styles ranging from IPAs to stouts, as well as seasonal beers. In addition to their handcrafted beers, they also serves up local wines, liquors, non-alcoholic beverages, and bar snacks.
Enjoy a drink on their patio or check out special events such as tap takeovers or live music.
Free Concerts At Marine Park
On Thursdays throughout summer Sag Harbor hosts free concerts at Marine Park. Each week hosts different bands of varying genres.
Grab a blanket and lawn chairs, plus your closest friends for a night of free live music in Sag Harbor.
Marine Park is located off Bay Street, just steps from Main Street and Long Wharf.
I have yet to find a website with event information. However, there are usually signs around town advertising the shows.
John Steinbeck Waterfront Park
Also located just steps from Main Street in Sag Harbor is John Steinbeck Waterfront Park.
This green space overlooks the marina, so it’s a great spot to view the luxury boats which dock here. It’s also a lovely location to watch the sunset.
The park has a few picnic benches, plus plenty of green space to let the little ones run around.

Sag Harbor hosts a variety of festivals and events throughout the year. Many of which reflect its rich history, artistic community, and maritime heritage.

Things To Do In Sag Harbor During Winter
Winter is a great time to visit the Hamptons if you’re looking for a quieter experience. During the colder months you’ll find the traffic isn’t as hectic, the beaches are empty, and the hotel rates are relatively inexpensive.
The downside is that many shops and restaurants shut down this time of year.
However, Sag Harbor is less seasonal than other Hamptons towns, so you’re likely to have a good time here no matter the season.
Below are some of the best things to do in Sag Harbor during winter:
- Put on your warmest winter jacket and stroll the empty beaches.
- Snag a deal at a designer shop, it’s not uncommon to find clearance prices come winter months.
- Go ice skating at Buckskill Winter Club or Southampton Ice Rink.
- Listen to live music at Faraway Sag Harbor.
- Enjoy Sag Harbor’s HarborFrost festival in early February.
