What To Wear In San Francisco (easy ideas for any time of year!)

Trying to figure out what to wear in San Francisco can be surprisingly confusing. It’s one of those places where the weather doesn’t behave the way you expect — especially if you’re visiting in summer.

I’ve been a few times now, and every trip has reinforced the same thing: if you don’t pack right here, you’ll feel it quickly. So here’s exactly what to wear in San Francisco, plus a simple packing list to make things easy.

What To Wear In San Francisco

San Francisco is one of those destinations where what you think you should pack… is usually wrong.

Even in the middle of summer, this is not a sundresses-and-sandals kind of city. The weather is mild, but there’s almost always a cool breeze — and it can shift quickly depending on where you are.

If you remember just two things, you’ll be in good shape: layers and comfortable shoes.

The hills are constant (and steep), and you’ll likely be walking a lot.

Once you plan around these things, everything else falls into place.

Casual Outfits

San Francisco is a very casual city. You’ll see everything from jeans and sneakers to more eclectic, expressive outfits — there’s definitely a “wear whatever you want” vibe here.

That said, function matters more than fashion in this city.

Skip short overly flowy skirts or dresses — the wind is real and constant. And most of the time, it’s simply not warm enough for typical summer outfits.

There are times of year when San Francisco feels a little more summer-like, especially during early fall when the city often gets its warmest, sunniest stretch. And on warmer spring or fall days, you can absolutely wear some lighter pieces. Just make sure you pair them with warm layers, because temperatures can still shift quickly and evenings cool off fast.

A good go-to outfit:

  • Jeans or leggings
  • A t-shirt or long sleeve
  • A sweater or light layer
  • Comfortable sneakers or boots

Easy, practical, and you’ll blend right in.

Below are a few outfit ideas for casual wear in San Francisco.

Layers (This Is the Most Important Part)

If you pack one thing right, let it be this.

San Francisco weather changes throughout the day — and even more depending on the neighborhood. The city’s microclimates are very real, so one area can feel sunny and mild while another is foggy, windy, and noticeably colder. You can go from comfortable to freezing faster than you’d expect.

You’ll want:

  • A light jacket (year-round)
  • A sweater, fleece, or hoodie
  • Something you can easily take on and off

Even in summer, you’ll likely reach for a jacket at some point — especially near the water or in the evening.

A good rule of thumb: dress for fall, even if it’s July.

I’ve included lots of layering pieces in my San Francisco outfit collection below.

Shoes

You need comfortable walking shoes here. The hills in San Francisco are no joke, and you’ll feel it quickly if you’re not prepared.

On my first trip, I packed wedges (lol, why!?). Within 30 minutes, I realized that was never happening. I wore sneakers the entire time — sightseeing, dinners, everything. Between the steep hills, uneven sidewalks, and how much you naturally end up walking, impractical shoes get old very fast here. This is not the city to break in new shoes or pretend you’ll be fine in something uncomfortable.

Stick with sneakers, flat boots, or anything well broken in that you’re used to walking in for long periods of time.

Leave the heels at home unless you know you won’t be walking much.

Dinner & Nightlife

San Francisco continues to lean casual even at night.

You can absolutely dress up if you want, but most places are pretty relaxed. Think jeans or trousers, a nicer top or sweater, and sneakers or boots. Even at dinner, you generally do not need to overdo it here. A polished casual outfit makes much more sense than something overly formal, especially since you may still be walking up hills, waiting outside, or moving between neighborhoods.

You won’t feel underdressed, and you’ll be much more comfortable navigating the city.

Outdoor Excursions

If you’re planning to bike across the Golden Gate Bridge, walk Lands End, or spend time near the coast — expect it to be colder and windier than you think. These are exactly the kinds of activities where people get fooled by sunshine. It may look beautiful out, but once you’re exposed to the wind near the water, it can feel legitimately cold. This is especially true in the morning, late afternoon, and anytime fog rolls in.

Wear lightweight, breathable base layers, a warm outer layer, leggings or comfortable pants, and sneakers or hiking shoes.

Summer Day Trips (This Is When You Can Wear Summer Clothes!)

San Francisco is much cooler than most U.S. cities year-round, but here’s the twist: thanks to Bay Area microclimates, it can be much warmer once you get outside the city, especially in summer.

If you’re heading further inland — to Napa, Sonoma, Sausalito, Oakland, etc. — on a warmer day it can feel like a completely different season. This is where the shorts, dresses, and lighter outfits you were hoping to pack actually make more sense. The further you get from the immediate coast, the better your chances of actual warm weather conditions. That said, temperatures can still drop in the evening, so it’s smart to keep a layer with you.

Below are some summer pieces for a warmer climate.

San Francisco Packing List (Long Weekend)

Here’s exactly what I’d pack:

  • 2 pairs of jeans or leggings
  • 2 – 3 tops (mix of short + long sleeve)
  • 1 sweater or fleece
  • 1 light jacket
  • 1 rain jacket (seasonal)
  • 1 – 2 pairs of comfortable walking shoes
  • Sunglasses
  • Crossbody bag or small backpack
  • Socks, undergarments, and loungewear

Seasonal adds:

  • Winter: warmer jacket, beanie, light gloves
  • Rainy months: waterproof shoes or boots

San Francisco Weather

San Francisco doesn’t follow typical seasonal patterns — and this is where people get tripped up.

The easiest way to think about it: it feels like fall most of the year.

  • Winter (Dec – Feb): coolest + rainiest, but still mild overall
  • Spring (Mar – May): similar temps, less rain
  • Summer (Jun – Aug): dry but cool and often foggy
  • Fall (Sep – Oct): usually the warmest and sunniest time

Two important things:

  • Fog + wind are very normal, especially in summer
  • Microclimates are real — different neighborhoods can feel totally different

So even if the forecast looks nice, always bring a layer.

Below are the average monthly temperatures in San Francisco:

  • January (high/ low F°) – 57° / 46°
  • February – 61° / 48°
  • March – 63° / 50°
  • April – 66° / 51°
  • May – 68° / 53°
  • June – 71° / 55°
  • July – 72° / 57°
  • August – 72° / 57°
  • September – 74° / 58°
  • October – 71° / 56°
  • November – 64° / 51°
  • December – 58° / 46°
