Planning a trip to Taos and wondering where to stay? Taos doesn’t have many big chain hotels, which is one of the things I like about it. Instead, you’ll find historic adobe inns, small bed and breakfasts, locally owned hotels, and a few modern boutique properties. A lot of them have their own history and personality, which feels very fitting for Taos.

You also have plenty of options when it comes to location. Stay near Taos Plaza if you want to walk to shops, restaurants, galleries, and museums, look just outside downtown for somewhere a little quieter, or head up to Taos Ski Valley if you plan to spend most of your time in the mountains.

With that said, these are my picks for the best hotels in Taos, New Mexico.

Best Hotels In Taos, New Mexico

Hacienda del Sol

Historic Boutique Inn | North of Downtown Taos | $$ | Book Here

Originally built in 1804, Hacienda del Sol is one of the most historic places to stay in Taos. The adobe property has strong ties to the town’s artistic history and was once home to Mabel Dodge Luhan and Tony Lujan before becoming the boutique inn it is today. The historic buildings surround a shared courtyard with views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and the property sits just north of downtown Taos.

Rooms range from smaller guest rooms to spacious villas and casitas, and no two are exactly alike. Depending on which one you book, you may find a kiva fireplace, private patio, mountain views, Jacuzzi tub, steam shower, or even a full kitchen. Breakfast is included each morning, and while you won’t find resort-style amenities like a pool or spa, that’s not really the draw here — you’re staying in a historic adobe property with beautiful grounds and a lot of Taos history behind it.

If you’re looking for somewhere a little quieter, Old Taos Guesthouse is a great option. The inn sits on 7.5 acres with mature trees, gardens, plenty of outdoor seating, and views across the Taos Valley. The original adobe home was built more than 200 years ago and, over the years, went from a farmer’s home to an artist’s estate before becoming a guesthouse in the 1940s.

Rooms and casitas are individually decorated, with features like wood-beamed ceilings, handcrafted furniture, Mexican tile bathrooms, private outdoor entrances, and patios. Select accommodations also have kiva fireplaces, kitchen facilities, or additional living space. A full homemade breakfast is included each morning and can be enjoyed in the dining room or outside under the trees. You’re also less than two miles from Taos Plaza, so while it feels removed from downtown, you’re still only a short drive away.

Hotel Willa is one of the newest and more upscale places to stay in Taos. The 51-room hotel occupies a restored 1940s motel in the historic district, with modern interiors, New Mexican influences, and original work from local artists throughout the property. There’s also a gallery with rotating exhibitions and an Artist-in-Residence program, so the connection to Taos’ art scene goes beyond the decor.

Rooms range from standard king and double rooms to larger suites and the standalone Adobe House. You’ll find custom furnishings, local artwork, luxury linens, walk-in showers, complimentary Wi-Fi, and streaming TVs, while select rooms add features like fireplaces and private patios. The Adobe House is the best fit if you need more space, with options that include full kitchens, living areas, and an enclosed garden.

Hotel Willa also has one of the best amenity packages in Taos, with a year-round heated pool and spa, infrared sauna, cold plunge, fitness center, and an on-site restaurant, Juliette. Guests also have access to a complimentary shuttle and Volkswagen Taos vehicles for exploring the area, which is a pretty unique perk.

Located just one block from Taos Plaza, Casa Benavides Inn is one of the best options if you want to stay right in the middle of town. The historic adobe property puts restaurants, museums, galleries, and shops within easy walking distance, so you won’t need to use your car much if you’re planning to spend most of your time exploring downtown.

Guest rooms are individually decorated, with Southwestern artwork, handcrafted furnishings, and plenty of traditional New Mexican details throughout. Depending on the room, you may also have a private patio or outdoor seating area. The property is relatively small, giving it more of a traditional bed and breakfast feel, and a homemade breakfast is included each morning.

Originally built as a ranch in 1912, the property now sits on four landscaped acres with adobe-style buildings, hammocks, picnic areas, mountain views, and plenty of outdoor space. It has a more casual feel than many of Taos’ historic inns while still fitting right in with the town.

Rooms range from standard guest rooms to fireplace rooms and historic casita-style accommodations in one of the property’s original adobe buildings. All rooms include mini refrigerators, coffee makers, Wi-Fi, TVs, and updated bathrooms, while select rooms have wood-burning kiva fireplaces. There’s also a seasonal outdoor pool, year-round hot tub, fitness room, fire pit, barbecue grills, and complimentary evening cookies. A hot breakfast is included each morning, and combined with the walkable location and extra amenities, I think El Pueblo Lodge offers some of the best overall value in Taos.

Palacio de Marquesa

With just eight guest rooms, Palacio de Marquesa is one of the smallest and more upscale places to stay in Taos. The design is contemporary but still has plenty of New Mexican influence, making it a little different from the more rustic historic inns around town. Each room is also inspired by an influential woman connected to Taos, including Georgia O’Keeffe, Agnes Martin, Mabel Dodge Luhan, and Millicent Rogers.

Rooms have king beds, heated Saltillo tile floors, marble bathrooms, gas kiva fireplaces, and custom furnishings, while select accommodations add private patios or additional living space. Breakfast is included and can be delivered to your room or enjoyed in the shared great room. You won’t find amenities like a pool or spa here, but with only eight rooms, this is a good option if you prefer an intimate property with a more upscale feel.

Hotel Luna Mystica is easily one of the most unique places to stay in Taos. Instead of a traditional hotel room, you’ll stay in one of the property’s restored vintage travel trailers, each with its own design and personality. The hotel sits on more than 12 acres of open mesa with mountain views and plenty of space around you, so this is a very different experience from staying near downtown Taos.

Each trailer has a private bathroom, kitchen facilities, heating, air conditioning, and its own outdoor deck. The property also offers tent camping and primitive RV sites, along with shared fire pits, an office lounge, a nature area, and complimentary Wi-Fi. Another big perk is being right next to Taos Mesa Brewing, so you can easily walk over for food, drinks, or live music. The trade-off is location: you’re about eight miles from downtown, so I’d pick this one for the unique accommodations rather than easy access to Taos Plaza.

La Doña Luz Inn is arguably one of the most unique places to stay in Taos. Rather than feeling like a traditional hotel, the historic adobe property is filled with colorful artwork, handcrafted woodwork, Spanish and Indigenous artifacts, and traditional New Mexican design. Every room is individually decorated, so it’s definitely worth looking through the different options before deciding which one to book.

Accommodations range from smaller guest rooms to spacious suites, many with adobe fireplaces, locally inspired decor, and private outdoor spaces. Depending on the room, you may also find a Jacuzzi tub, private rooftop hot tub, balcony, or mountain views. All rooms include air conditioning, Wi-Fi, mini refrigerators, microwaves, coffee makers, and TVs. With so much variation between rooms, I’d spend a little extra time comparing them before booking — some are much more elaborate than others.

Alpine Village Suites

If your trip is centered around Taos Ski Valley rather than downtown Taos, Alpine Village Suites is one of the best places to stay. This family-owned mountain lodge is just a short walk from the ski lifts, giving you easy access to skiing and snowboarding in winter and hiking and mountain biking during the warmer months. It feels much more like a traditional mountain lodge than the historic inns and boutique hotels in town, so I’d especially consider this one if you plan to spend most of your trip in the mountains.

Accommodations range from studios and lofts to one and two bedroom suites and standalone mountain homes. Most have kitchenettes or full kitchens, which is especially helpful for families and longer stays. There’s also an outdoor hot tub, dry sauna, massage services, ski lockers, and outdoor grilling areas. The biggest trade-off is the location — Taos Ski Valley is about a 30 to 40 minute drive from downtown Taos.

• Pool / hot tub / spa: Outdoor hot tub, dry sauna, and massage services.
