Nestled in the Roaring Fork Valley at 8,000 feet above sea level, is Aspen, Colorado. Easily one of the most famous ski towns in the world.

This small mountain community is known for world-class skiing, 5 star hotels, fine dining, celebrity sightings, and luxury shopping.

Aspen may be internationally known for its skiing, but don’t underestimate fall in this charming city! The fall foliage is incredible here, and outdoor activities are abundant.

The Best Things To Do In Aspen During Fall

View The Fall Foliage

Viewing fall foliage in the Aspen area is a magical experience. The vibrant autumn colors transform the landscape into a stunning sight.

Yellow is the most common foliage color to spot here. This is thanks to the aspen trees which grow throughout the Colorado Rockies. Best of all — and not surprisingly — aspens grow in abundance here, hence the town’s name.

Aspens grow in large clusters, not by chance, but thanks to their ability to clone themselves.

Yep, that’s right, trees in an aspen grove share a root system and are, genetically speaking, identical. Because of this, all (genetically identical) trees will turn at the same time.

The leaves in this area often turn around mid September or very early October.

Seeing the aspens at peak requires some luck. It’s not uncommon for the leaves to fall, seemingly, as quick as they turn. Whereas other years, they’ll hold on for weeks.

Go For A Hike Near Town

If you’re lucky enough to be here while the aspen leaves are changing, you must go for a hike.

A fall hike in Aspen will reward you with a beautiful sea of brilliant yellow.

Lower Hunter Creek Trail

Lower Hunter Creek Trail is an easy and enjoyable hike with lovely fall colors, just minutes from downtown.

The 2 mile hiking trail is mostly flat and follows a creek surrounded by aspen groves.

With the trailhead only 15 minutes from downtown, this is a wonderful option for a quick morning hike.

• American Lake Trail – Rated hard, 6.8 miles, 2,043 foot elevation change.

Maroon Bells

One of the best things to do in Aspen in the fall? See the Maroon Bells.

The Maroon Bells are the most photographed place in Colorado, and for good reason. These famous peaks put on an incredible show year-round, but especially in fall.

The bright yellow aspen leaves reflect beautifully on Maroon Lake, with the stunning, striped Maroon Bells in the background.

Enjoy a 3 mile walk around Maroon Lake on the Scenic Loop Trail, or take a 3.5 mile out-and-back hike to Crater Lake for a (relatively) less crowded view of these breathtaking peaks.

This is easily one of the best places to see fall colors in Aspen!

How To Get To The Maroon Bells

Due to popularity and limited parking, visitors wishing to see the Maroon Bells are required to use the RFTA shuttle service between the hours of 8 am–5 pm.

The fare is $16/ person. The shuttle takes about 20 minutes each way and the driver will provide information and point out wildlife throughout the trip.

Shuttle service is seasonal, and usually wraps up in mid to late October. For up to date information, check out Aspen Snowmass Maroon Bells Shuttle.

To access the shuttle’s starting point from downtown Aspen, take the free Castle/Maroon bus to Aspen Highlands from the Rubey Park Transit Center.

The bus system is extremely convenient and easy to use, so I recommend this route.

Otherwise, park your car at the Aspen Highlands parking structure for a fee.

Explore Downtown Aspen

Aspen has a fabulous downtown area with beautiful fall colors.

Spend your time browsing the luxury shops and western wear stores, an interesting juxtaposition living side by side. Grab a patio drink on Mill Street Mall, check out an art gallery, or visit a museum.

Between exploring the shops and galleries, grab a coffee and soak in the autumn sun at a park.

We enjoyed relaxing at Wagner Park, located in the heart of downtown Aspen. 

If you’re looking for a quieter park, check out Koch Park or Newbury Park nestled along the Roaring Fork River.

Ride The Silver Queen Gondola

One of the best things to do in Aspen during fall is ride the Silver Queen Gondola.

A ride on the gondola is a unique experience, providing incredible views of the surrounding area.

Once you’ve reached the summit, 11,200 feet above sea level, there’s miles of hiking and biking trails, a disc golf course, and family-friendly activities. Plus of course, fabulous views of the surrounding fall foliage.

The Silver Queen Gondola departs from the base of Aspen Mountain (Ajax), in the heart of downtown.

Scenic gondola rides run through early October. Pricing and hours vary, so be sure to check out Aspen Snowmass Gondola Rides.

Following your gondola ride, grab a glass of champagne and a quick bite from Ajax Tavern’s patio. This is an Aspen favorite no matter the season.

Tip: Another popular scenic gondola ride is the Elk Camp Gondola, departing from Snowmass Village.

Aspen Saturday Market

If you’re in Aspen during a fall weekend, check out the Aspen Saturday Market.

This popular farmers market has been a local’s favorite for over 20 years now. Pick up Colorado grown produce or browse handmade crafts and artisan goods. There’s even a food court, perfect for a quick bite.

The market runs on Saturdays throughout summer, wrapping up the season in early October.

Orchard Creek Ranch 

Looking to go apple picking near Aspen this fall? While Aspen doesn’t have the right conditions for apple trees, nearby Glenwood Springs does.

Orchard Creek Ranch is located just an hour from town and offers u-pick apples each fall.

In addition to apples they have a market which sells local sweet corn, pumpkins, fresh pressed cider, potatoes, sunflowers, local honey, and more.

No doubt, this is a perfect fall activity near Aspen.

Castle Creek Road

One of the most popular scenic drives in the Aspen area is Castle Creek Road (CR 15).

The aspen-lined road winds through Castle Creek Valley, and is perfect for a fall drive. There’s plenty of pull outs to stop and snap a pic.

The paved road runs for about 11 miles, starting near downtown Aspen.

The road may close due to weather at any time, and is typically closed for the season around mid November.

Ashcroft Ghost Town

Located at the end of Castle Creek Road is the much-loved Ashcroft Ghost Town. And really, there’s no better time of year to visit than autumn.

The former silver mining town was originally established in the late 1800’s during the Silver Boom. The town very quickly swelled to a population of 2,000, before dwindling to nearly 0 just a few short years later.

So the story goes for many of Colorado’s once-mining towns. Not many managed to morph into world-famous ski resorts.

Today, several historic buildings have been restored, including a saloon, post office, and hotel.

Summer is the most popular time of year to visit, but fall is really incredible here. The historic buildings sit under a huge aspen grove, creating an incredible, bright yellow backdrop behind the ghost town.

The ghost town is ran by the Aspen Historical Society and admission is $5/ person. There’s nobody on site outside of summer months, but fees can be paid at the admission payment dropbox, located on the welcome sign.

Visit Snowmass Village

Aspen has four ski areas, with Snowmass being the largest. At the base of this massive mountain is the Town of Snowmass Village.

The village has tons of entertainment options, even when skiers are away.

In the warmer months, Snowmass offers seemingly endless hiking and biking trails. Plus, lots of fun events, an alpine coaster, and scenic gondola rides, in addition to delicious dining options.

Best of all? Fall colors are excellent here, making it a great stop during your fall visit to Aspen.

Tip: Check out free outdoor concerts, via Music On The Mall, every Friday through the end of September. The full line up can be found at The Snowmass Mall.

The village is located just 10 miles from downtown Aspen. And Aspen’s excellent (and free) public transportation system makes it extremely easy to navigate between the two.

Cemetery Tour

Looking for the perfect fall activity in Aspen? Join a cemetery tour.

There are two popular options in Aspen: Red Butte Cemetery Tour & Walk With The Dead Cemetery Tour (Ute Cemetery).

Red Butte Cemetery Tour covers one of the town’s oldest burial grounds, dating back to the late 1800s. The picturesque cemetery sits above downtown Aspen, under a grove of deciduous trees, which put on quite the show come fall.

Day time guided tours are offered via the Aspen Historical Society through late September. Tours need to be reserved in advance, head on over to Aspen Historical Society Tours.

Walk With The Dead Cemetery Tour is a popular nighttime tour. This spooky guided tour takes place at another of the town’s oldest burial grounds, Ute Cemetery. It covers Ute City ghost stories and tells the tales of Aspen’s lesser known past.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding in Aspen during the fall can be seriously picturesque.

Fall in the Rocky Mountains brings crisp air, stunning foliage, and beautiful landscapes, making it a perfect time for outdoor activities such as horseback riding. 

A few ranches in the Aspen area offer guided horseback rides which allow you to soak in the region’s natural beauty. 

Wheeler Opera House

The Wheeler Opera House is a historic performing arts venue that’s been a cultural cornerstone of the community for over a century.

The building was constructed in 1889, when Aspen was a mining town reaping the benefits of the brief Silver Boom.

The venue hosts a variety of shows including opera performances, concerts, theatrical productions, film screenings, and comedy acts, to name a few.

They also offer free historic tours, led by the Aspen Historical Society, for those interested in learning more about the history of the building and town.

Fishing

Fishing is among the most popular things to do in Aspen thanks to pristine lakes and streams, and the fall season happens to be a great time for it.

Roaring Fork River, Frying Pan River, Crystal River, Weller Lake, and Maroon Lake are a few of the many popular spots to fish.

In the area, rainbow, brown, and cutthroat trout, plus whitefish can all be found.

Aspen Art Museum

Looking for an indoor activity during your fall visit to Aspen? Consider the Aspen Art Museum.

It’s known for innovative and diverse exhibitions, plus engaging educational programs and events.

They also have a chic rooftop restaurant, Rooftop Café, with fabulous views, light bites and wine.

The building is centrally located in downtown Aspen, making it very easy to visit. As for the building itself, you can’t miss it.

The museum’s building is a work of art. The distinctive structure is characterized by a unique woven wooden lattice exterior, designed by renowned architect Shigeru Ban.

Belly Up

Belly Up is a much-loved live music venue and nightclub in downtown Aspen.

The intimate, 450 person venue is general admission only, which creates a casual atmosphere regardless of how big the night’s performer is.

A few of the big name artists to take the stage include John Legend, The National, Snoop Dogg, Kacey Musgraves, Dave Chappelle, Jimmy Buffett, Odesza, and Leon Bridges, to name just a few.

John Denver Sanctuary

The John Denver Sanctuary is a peaceful outdoor tribute to the famous American singer-songwriter, John Denver.

The “Rocky Mountain High” singer had a home in Aspen and was an advocate for environmental conservation.

The public park is located in a quiet part of downtown, just off the Roaring Fork River. It’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the beautiful fall weather.

While you’re here, be sure to check out the Song Garden, which features some of the artist’s most iconic lyrics etched into native river boulders.

Elk Camp Oktoberfest

One of the liveliest fall events in Aspen is Elk Camp Oktoberfest.

You’ll find beer tents serving a variety of German and local brews, as well as yummy dishes like pretzels, sausages, sauerkraut, and more.

Oktoberfest activities include live music, traditional dance performances, games, and classic Oktoberfest contests.

The event is held in Snowmass Village, typically in late September or early October.

Aspen Ghost Tour

If you’re looking for a spooky fall activity in Aspen, a ghost tour should definitely be on your list.

Aspen’s Darkside Ghost Tour covers the town’s gruesome history and haunted happenings in a small group setting.

The nighttime tours are offered year-round, check availability at Aspen’s DarkSide Ghost Tour.

This is a fun way to learn Aspen’s history, not to mention, a perfect fall activity.

Halloween Events In Aspen

Halloween events in Aspen, Colorado can vary from year to year, but the town often hosts a range of exciting activities for both locals and visitors to enjoy. 

These events provide a fun, family-friendly atmosphere, with various activities embracing the Halloween spirit. Plus some fun, adult-only parties and costume contests.

Drive Independence Pass

Those up for a scenic drive, be sure to drive Independence Pass.

This historic byway runs about 30 miles from Aspen to Twin Lakes, and is the perfect place for leaf peepers.

Independence Pass summits at 12,095 feet and crosses the continental divide. Although it’s a paved road, it can be narrow and winding, with occasional steep drop-offs. Keep an eye on weather and don’t attempt this drive in poor conditions.

Allow an hour of drive time in each direction. You’ll want time for stops because there are so many great photo opportunities and wonderful fall colors throughout this scenic drive.

The pass is typically open until early November, but may vary. Check out road information at Colorado Department of Transportation.

Twin Lakes, Colorado

If driving Independence Pass, plan to spend a few hours in Twin Lakes.

This picturesque mountain town is known for water activities such as fishing and boating, in addition to excellent biking and hiking trails.

The small town is very quiet compared to Aspen, so enjoy the solitude while you explore the local shops and restaurants lining the downtown area.

Glenwood Springs, Colorado

Another great day trip from Aspen is Glenwood Springs.

The neighboring city is best known for excellent hot springs and gorgeous Glenwood Canyon. It’s definitely worth a visit, no matter the time of year.

If you prefer something a little more low key, I’d recommend Aspen Public House, Zane’s Tavern, or Aspen Brewing Company.

What to expect weather-wise in Aspen during fall can vary quite a bit.

Early to mid September is still very summer like, with warm sunny days and cool nights.

Late September and October become much cooler, and the chance for snow increases. Although, there’s still plenty of sunny days.

November is basically winter, with ski season beginning around Thanksgiving, some years even earlier.

No matter the time of year, it’s not uncommon for it to feel warmer than the thermometer indicates, thanks to the intense sun at this altitude.

• September – 70° / 41° (Average High / Low F°)
• October – 58° / 31°
• November – 45° / 20°

What To Wear In Aspen In The Fall

What to wear when visiting Aspen in the fall depends on what month you’re visiting.

Those visiting in early September will most likely need regular summer attire. For example, jeans pants or shorts and a t-shirt, plus a jacket or long sleeve. Mornings and evenings will cool off significantly, so it’s important to bring layers.

For those visiting during late September or October, warm layers are appropriate. Plan on pants and a long sleeve shirt, plus a jacket. Additionally, cold weather accessories, such as a warm hat, scarf, and gloves, may be necessary.

If snow is in the forecast you will also need waterproof and warm layers.

No matter the time of year, don’t forget sun protection, such as hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. At Aspen’s high attitude the sun is more intense and it’s easier to burn.

Getting To Aspen

Aspen/ Pitkin County Airport – 10 minutes (3.5 miles) from downtown Aspen. This regional airport is serviced by a few major airlines such as United and American Airlines, or available for private charter.

Denver International Airport – 3.5 – 4 hours (222 miles) from Denver to Aspen. This is the nearest international airport and is serviced by most all major airlines.

Getting Around Aspen

Whether or not you need a rental car is up to you. If you plan to stay in the downtown area, most everything is walkable or manageable with Aspen’s easy to use bus system.

A car will be necessary if you want to do anything outside of Aspen’s core, such as hiking or day trips.

Where To Stay In Aspen

Downtown Aspen is definitely the best place to stay if visiting during fall.

For my most recent fall visit we chose to stay at The Aspen Mountain Residences (formerly Hyatt Residence Club Grand Aspen) for its fabulous location.

It’s within walking distance of the Silver Queen Gondola, dining, shopping, parks, and trails. They also offer complimentary transportation to and from Aspen Airport.
