From boutique hotels and full-blown resorts to small oceanfront motels, there’s a wider variety of places to stay here than in most Hamptons hamlets. It’s also home to some of the only beachfront hotels in the entire Hamptons. As someone who used to live in the Hamptons and still returns every year to visit family, I can say for sure Montauk really is unique.

Below are some of the best Montauk hotels for different travel styles and budgets.

Best Hotels In Montauk, New York

Montauk Manor

Montauk Manor is one of the most classic places to stay in Montauk — a historic property with condo-style accommodations and a true resort-feel setting up on the hill.

The hotel has 140 condominium apartments, plus both an outdoor pool and an indoor pool setup with a whirlpool and saunas. There’s also an on-site day spa (hotel guests only), tennis courts, and sunset yoga, which makes it a strong pick if you want amenities without leaving the property. 

Rooms range from studios to three bedrooms and most include kitchenettes or full kitchens, which is great for longer stays. Additionally, you’ve got an on-site restaurant serving meals all day and drinks into the night.

The marina, ocean beaches, and downtown Montauk around about 1.5 to 2 miles away.

If you want a luxury resort experience in Montauk, Gurney’s is the big-name option — and it’s well built for staying put.

This is a great pick if you plan to spend most of your time out exploring Montauk — the beach and downtown Montauk are both a short walk — and you just need a comfortable home base.

Amenities are a big part of the experience here and add a lot of value. Guests have access to beach essentials like chairs, umbrellas, and towels, along with complimentary bike rentals and a rotating lineup of wellness events like yoga, meditation, fitness classes, and creative workshops. The property also features fire pits, a heated outdoor pool, and a steam room and sauna.

There isn’t a restaurant on-site, but light bites and coffee are available in the morning, plus a small lobby bar and a few social gathering spaces around the property.

The beach is an easy walk, and downtown Montauk is about half a mile from the hotel.

Lenhart’s Cottages is one of Montauk’s true hidden gems, offering individual cottages rather than traditional hotel-style rooms. The property dates back decades and has that classic, causal Montauk feel, while the accommodations themselves have been nicely updated.

All units feature homey layouts with modern touches, heat and AC, and simple kitchenettes or kitchens. Many also include patios, wood-burning fireplaces, picnic tables, and BBQ grills, which makes this a great option for longer stays or small groups.

Amenities are fairly simple but include an outdoor pool and a few shared guest spaces. The setting is quiet and residential, with the beach within walking distance (though you’ll need to go up and down a set of stairs) and downtown Montauk just a short drive away.

This is a great choice if you prefer a more private, home-style stay rather than a resort-style hotel.

Montauk Yacht Club is one of the largest full-service properties in the area, set on an island on Lake Montauk rather than directly on the ocean.

The 106-room resort has a true marina feel, with beautiful harbor views throughout the property — and especially from the pool area.

Room options range from standard guest rooms and suites to cottages, with many featuring patios or balconies.

Amenities here are extensive. The resort includes multiple pools (both indoor and outdoor, including kid-friendly and adult-only options), a fitness center, bike rentals, paddle and tennis courts, kids programming, and several on-site restaurants and bars. There are also complimentary harbor cruises, group fitness and yoga classes, and a full-service spa, which together make this one of the most amenity-rich resort options in Montauk.

Because the property sits on the harbor side, it offers a quieter waterfront setting with beach chairs and umbrellas available for guests. The ocean beaches and downtown Montauk’s shops and restaurants are just over five minutes away by car. The resort also offers complimentary transportation to town and anywhere within a five-mile radius, which covers most of Montauk.

Montauk Hotel Expectations

While researching hotels for this guide, I read through a lot of guest reviews. One of the most common complaints I saw was some version of: “The hotel wasn’t worth the price I paid.” This tends to be a Montauk-wide issue (and really, the entire Hamptons) rather than something specific to one property, so it’s worth setting expectations before you book.

Montauk is expensive during peak season, and very expensive on summer weekends. Additionally, many of the hotels here are older motels that have been renovated over the years. They come with a few quirks.

In many cases, you’re paying prices that might feel closer to a 5-star hotel while staying in what is essentially a renovated motel. What you’re really paying for though is location. Montauk is one of the most famous and exclusive beach destinations in the United States, but it has a limited number of hotels and a surprisingly short peak season. Demand is extremely high, and supply is limited.

Because of that, peak summer visitors can sometimes end up paying luxury-level prices for what feels more like a mid-range hotel. It’s simply the reality of supply and demand in this area. If that’s something that might bother you, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons when prices are typically more reasonable.

Finally, noise is another common complaint you’ll see in reviews, especially in the older motel-style buildings. As a light sleeper myself, this is something I always pay attention to. Many of these buildings were originally built decades ago, when soundproofing wasn’t a major priority. Read through the hotel’s recent reviews, this should be very helpful for getting a sense of what to expect and will ultimately help you choose the right hotel.

Montauk may be small, but it offers a surprisingly wide range of places to stay, from boutique hotels and resorts to classic beach motels. Hopefully this guide helps you narrow down the options and find the right hotel for your trip.
