Montauk, New York, is one of the most beloved hamlets in the Hamptons. Famous for its epic surfing, scenic state parks, sandy beaches, lively nightlife, and… Stranger Things, Montauk has something for everyone.

Whether you’re drawn to the town’s peaceful, natural side or its vibrant, energetic side, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy this coastal gem.

I spent a year living in the Hamptons, and always looked forward to exploring Montauk. Here are some of my favorite things to do in Montauk, New York!

The Best Things To Do In Montauk

Surf (or watch the surfers) At Ditch Plains Beach

Montauk is one of the best places to surf in the Hamptons — and arguably along the entire East Coast. You’ll find surfers throughout the area, but Ditch Plains Beach is especially popular thanks to its consistent waves.

Even if surfing isn’t your thing, Ditch Plains is a great spot to relax on the sand. Bring a lounge chair, some sunblock, a game of Kadima, and enjoy the beach vibes.

If you’re visiting on a summer weekend, aim to arrive by 10 a.m. to grab a good spot. A day at the beach is one of the most popular things to do in Montauk, so expect it to get crowded.

Beaches In Montauk

Montauk has a great variety of beaches, whether you’re planning to surf or just want to stretch out and relax. Here are a few local favorites:

• Kirk Park Beach – Offers day parking passes and is the most centrally located.
• Hither Hills State Park
• Nick’s Beach
• Gin Beach
• Ditch Plains Beach

Note: Many Hampton beaches are free and open to the public, but parking is not. Rules and rates change often, so check the Town of East Hampton Beaches website for the latest information. To avoid parking permit hassles, you can walk, bike, or get dropped off at any public beach without a permit or fee.

Montauk Point State Park & Montauk Point Lighthouse

Located in Montauk Point State Park, Montauk Point Lighthouse is New York’s oldest lighthouse and one of the most iconic attractions in the Hamptons.

The picturesque lighthouse is open for tours, and visitors are welcome to walk around the scenic grounds. The surrounding area features a mix of sandy and rocky shoreline with sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a beautiful walk and a great way to spend an afternoon in Montauk.

The lighthouse and its surrounding area are often referred to as “The End of the World,” a fitting nickname given that it’s the easternmost point in New York State.

Tip: Keep an eye out for seals! They’re often spotted on the north side of Montauk Point State Park during winter and spring.

Montauk Point State Park is located about 5 miles from downtown Montauk, best reached by car or bike. Parking is available across from the lighthouse for $8 per vehicle.

Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum

If you’d like to dive deeper into Montauk’s history and the story behind New York’s first lighthouse, stop by the Montauk Point Lighthouse Museum.

Museum admission includes access to the top of the lighthouse for panoramic views on a clear day.

Catch A Sunset From The Montauket

Montauket is a family-owned restaurant and bar in an absolute prime location for sunsets. Enjoy a drink and casual seafood fare from their outdoor patio as the sun sets over the bay. Most nights have live music as well! 

Come see why Montauket has been a Montauk staple for over 50 years.

Be sure to also check out Duryea’s, Crow’s Nest, or Navy Beach at sunset. 

Camp Hero State Park

Located next to Montauk Point State Park, Camp Hero State Park offers bluff-top walking trails with incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and Montauk Lighthouse.

While you’re there, you can also explore the ruins of a former U.S. military base that operated during World War II.

If you’re into dramatic conspiracy theories, you’ll love the lore surrounding this site. Stories of human experiments, mind control, time travel, Demogorgon-like creatures, and psychedelic testing are just the beginning.

Sound familiar? That’s because Stranger Things was originally inspired by the eerie legends tied to Camp Hero. In fact, the show was initially set in New York and titled Montauk before producers changed the setting to a small town in Indiana. Spooky!

Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa 

The Hamptons are known for luxury hotels, but Gurney’s Resort & Seawater Spa stands out as one of the very few set on its own private beach.

This oceanfront resort is especially well known for its luxury spa, indoor pool, and its iconic Beach Club overlooking the Atlantic. A day at the Beach Club comes with all the amenities you could ask for — daybeds, cabanas, umbrellas, attentive waitstaff, bottle service… you name it. You’re sure to have the best time here.

Overnight guests have access to the private beach, and non-guests can inquire about day passes.

Go Shopping In Downtown Montauk

Spending time in downtown Montauk is always a favorite activity — whether you’re in the mood to shop, stroll, or snack your way through town.

Montauk’s shops offer a fun mix of upscale boutiques, relaxed beachwear, surf gear, and vintage treasures. You’ll also find a variety of places to refuel between stops, including cafes, seafood shacks, bakeries, and classic ice cream shops.

Most of the action is centered along Montauk Highway, within a compact and walkable stretch from roughly Kirk Park Beach to Essex Street. It’s easy to spend a few hours here, browsing local businesses and soaking up the laid-back beach town atmosphere.

Kayaking & Stand Up Paddle Boarding

Surfing isn’t the only water activity that draws visitors to Montauk. Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and windsurfing are all popular ways to enjoy the calm waters of Fort Pond Bay, Lake Montauk, or one of the quieter ponds scattered around town.

These activities are perfect for a peaceful day on the water, offering a slower pace to explore Montauk’s scenic coastline, spot local wildlife, and take in the natural beauty away from the crowds.

For rentals, check out Amagansett Beach & Bicycle Company or Khanh Sports — both also offer bike rentals if you’d rather explore Montauk on land. Guided tours and lessons are often available too, making it easy for beginners to try something new.

Golf

Montauk is undoubtedly home to the best public golf course in the Hamptons, Montauk Downs State Park Golf, simply referred to as Montauk Downs.

Designed by Robert Trent Jones, and just under 7,000 yards, this course balances a fun set up with challenging conditions. Those looking for an affordable place to play on Eastern Long Island, there’s no better option. 

Montauk Brewing Company

Montauk Brewing Company is a great place to enjoy a cold brew on a patio following a full day of activities.

The taproom is located in a small red barn in the heart of downtown Montauk and serves up rotating craft beers like lagers, IPAs, and ambers. 

They produce everything on site here in Montauk, impressive considering the brews are much-loved throughout NYC and the rest of the state.

Hike Walking Dunes Trail In Hither Hills State Park

The Walking Dunes Trail is an easy 2.7-mile loop that winds through shifting sand dunes and along the calm coast of Napeague Harbor.

The dunes earned their name because they slowly move about 3.5 inches per year, constantly reshaping the landscape. As you hike, you’ll see fascinating sights: trees partially buried with only their tops visible, shrubs with exposed root systems, and sand-covered terrain that seems to be alive. It’s a unique natural phenomenon and a trail that’s accessible for nearly any skill level.

Parking at the trailhead is free, but spaces are very limited. For the best experience, try to arrive early in the morning before crowds appear.

Other activities at Hither Hills State Park:

• Walk the Hither Hills Coastal Trail.

Montauk Indian Museum

Native Americans inhabited the far East End of Long Island long before Europeans arrived in the 1600s.

The Montauk Indian Museum explores what life was like for these early inhabitants, including their daily routines and relationships with neighboring tribes. The collection of traditional tools, clothing, and artifacts provides a glimpse into a life here not so long ago.

Run by the Montauk Historical Society, the museum is small and can be explored in about an hour, making it a perfect stop for history enthusiasts or anyone looking for an indoor activity on a rainy day in Montauk.

Go For A Boat Tour

During the summer season, enjoy a day on the water in Montauk.

With Mon Tiki Montauk Sailing you can choose between sailing lessons, sail and swim, or a quick sunset sail. This is a great way to spend a day with friends while soaking in the sun.

For those interested in a whale watching tour, Viking Fleet offers tours in congruence with the Coastal Research and Education Society of Long Island. Whales have made a huge comeback in the area in recent years (yay!). It’s now common to spot humpback, minke, and fin whales during summer, plus lots of common dolphins.

Grab A Bite At Lobster Roll (LUNCH)

You must stop at The Lobster Roll (LUNCH) for a bite to eat on your way to or from Montauk. This relaxed, iconic Hamptons restaurant has been a local favorite since the 1960s. Located right off Montauk Highway, you can’t miss it — just look for the giant “LUNCH” sign.

Not a lobster roll fan? No worries. The menu also features a variety of delicious seafood dishes, burgers, and even plant-based options.

The Lobster Roll has made its mark in pop culture, appearing in Showtime’s The Affair during the Season 1 debut episode. Over the years, many celebrities have visited, but the restaurant has maintained its unpretentious, laid-back charm.

Tip: The Clam Bar at Napeague is located just down the way and is another great place for a laid-back vibes and local seafood!

Deep Hollow Ranch

If you enjoy horseback riding, a visit to Deep Hollow Ranch is a must!

As one of the oldest working ranches in the United States, established in 1658, Deep Hollow Ranch has been a Montauk staple for centuries. They offer a variety of rides, with their most popular trails winding through gorgeous countryside and along sandy coastline, providing breathtaking views of the ocean and surrounding landscape.

For families traveling with young children, the ranch also offers pony rides, making it an accessible and memorable activity for all ages.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced rider, Deep Hollow Ranch is a unique way to experience Montauk’s natural beauty from horseback.

The Surf Lodge

The Surf Lodge is a small hotel that might seem unassuming at first, but in recent years it has become a well-known hotspot for partygoers.

The hotel’s deck bar and outdoor stage overlook Fort Pond Bay and were once part of a simple dive bar. Today, it’s one of the hottest destinations in the Hamptons, thanks to its legendary outdoor summer concert series.

The venue hosts not only local musicians but also artists with Grammy-level accolades. With such high-profile performers come celebrity spectators and large crowds, so getting into these shows can take a bit of effort.

There are countless fun events in Montauk, especially in summer. A few of the most popular festivals include:

Fishing

Surrounded by water, Montauk is naturally an excellent fishing destination — and it’s famously known as the surfcasting capital of the world. Yes, the fishing here is really that good.

The shore is especially renowned for striped bass, but anglers can also enjoy a wide diversity of other fish species.

For fishing regulations and licenses head over to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

For bait, gear, and up-to-date information on local conditions, Montauk Anglers Club & Marina is the go-to spot.

If you’re interested in offshore fishing, many local companies offer charters. Popular options include Double D Charters, Montauk Fishing Charters, Susie E II, and Viking Fleet, just to name a few.

Shadmoor State Park

Shadmoor State Park is one of the best hidden gems in the Hamptons. A short walk out to the sandy cliffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean rewards visitors with breathtaking views of Ditch Plains Beach and the surrounding coastline.

This small, undeveloped park is perfect for a short hike or simply taking in the dramatic coastal scenery. Trails wind along the cliffs and through natural dunes, making it a peaceful escape from the busier beaches nearby.

Shadmoor has no services and a very small parking lot, so it’s best to arrive early to secure a spot. Bring water, snacks, and sun protection, and enjoy the quiet beauty of this off-the-beaten-path location.

Montauk State Parks

I’ve already mentioned quite a few state parks in this guide, but there are even more to explore! I love the abundance of parks in the area — they provide a peaceful escape from the crowds and endless opportunities to hike, picnic, bike, watch wildlife, or simply soak in Montauk’s natural beauty.

Each park has its own unique charm, from rugged cliffs and sandy beaches to tranquil ponds and scenic trails, making them a must for anyone looking to experience the great outdoors in the Hamptons.

What To Do In Montauk During Winter

Winter is a great time to visit Montauk if you’re looking for a more relaxed experience. During the colder months you’ll find traffic is non-existent, the beaches are empty, and the hotel rates are relatively inexpensive.

While many businesses close this time of year, there’s still plenty to explore in the area. 

These are some of the top things to do in Montauk during winter:

• Put on your warmest winter jacket and stroll the empty beaches.
• Browse the year-round shops. 
• Have a spa day at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa.
• Go for a hike in one of the area’s many state parks.
• Watch for seals in Montauk Point State Park.
• Explore the Cultural Arts and Aquatic Centers at Montauk Playhouse Community Center.
