Sayulita is a charming little beach town in Riviera Nayarit about 1 hour from Puerto Vallarta. The town has long been desired due to its laid back vibe, surfing, and popularity among backpackers.

Over the years it has successfully managed to accommodate tourists without feeling overly commercialized. Yet, despite this, has flown under the radar by mainstream tourism standards. Read on for the best things to do in Sayulita, Mexico.

Go Whale Watching

Sayulita is a prime location for whales from December through March. This is because of its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and California Gulf intersection where you’ll find various whales including Gray Whales and Orcas. But the prized visitor is the Humpback Whale, which passes through each winter utilizing the warm California Gulf for birthing and mating. With some luck you may even see a baby whale!

You have a chance of spotting these spectacular animals from shore, but for a better view and unique experience I’d recommend joining in on a whale watching tour.

Hike Monkey Mountain & Explore The Jungle Surrounding Sayulita

There’s no shortage of activities in the dense jungle surrounding Sayulita. Take the popular trail from Sayulita to the town of San Pancho or enjoy a hike to the top of Monkey Mountain for incredible views of the surrounding landscape.

In addition to hiking, popular excursions include ATVing, ziplining, birding (there’s over 400 species here!), and mountain biking. 

A local tour is well worth the money due to their knowledge of the jungle and its many species of plants and animals. You can book a Monkey Mountain Jungle Hike Tour or Mountain Bike Tour.

Visit Islas Marietas 

Islas Marietas are small, uninhabited islands just off the coast. The islands are part of a National Marine Park with biodiversity often compared to the Galapagos. To see this beautiful and heavily protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll need a permitted boat tour. Only a handful of visitors are allowed per day due to the fragile nature of the islands, be sure to book this in advance!

If you’re lucky enough to snag a tour enjoy having this special place almost completely to yourself. Our group of 20 had the entire beach alone for about a half hour.

In addition to exploring the beautiful islands your full day boat tour will likely include snorkeling, food, drinks, and whale watching (if in season). We used Ally Cat Sailing Adventures, I would highly recommend them.

Learn To Surf

Sayulita has been drawing surfers since the 60’s. If you’ve always wanted to learn, this is a great and affordable place to try your luck. The area has got about 10 different spots to surf, each with varying levels of difficulty. But on the beach right in town the waves are normally predictable, mellow, and easy to ride, making it an excellent place for lessons.

Not in the mood for surfing? Stand up paddle, kayak, or grab a beer from a beach bar and watch the fun.

Shop Locally Made Items While Visiting Sayulita

Sayulita is a wonderful place to find a special gift or one-of-a-kind souvenir. This laid-back beach town offers a large variety of unique, handmade goods.

Native Huichol Indians, who have lived in Mexico for 15,000 years, live near Sayulita and have a few galleries and stores in town. You can purchase their authentic handcrafts, such as beadwork and yarn art here.

Spend an afternoon exploring the vibrant open air boutiques in the adorable town center. Be warned, you could spend hours looking through the art galleries and shops full of locally made items.

ATV Tequila Tour

If you’re up for a little adventure, and tequila, consider an ATV tequila tasting tour! Experience an adrenaline rush among the lush jungle and panoramic views. Chaparrita Tours offers a 2 hour ATV tour through Cerro de La Loca, the Mountain of the Crazy, followed by a tequila tasting.

Day Trip From Sayulita To Playa San Pancho

20 miles to the north of Sayulita is the quiet village of Playa San Pancho. The relaxing town offers expansive white sand beaches, excellent surf (not for beginners!), and tons of charm.

How To Get To Sayulita

Puerto Vallarta Airport (Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport) – 20 miles from Sayulita

From the airport you can take a bus or taxi, I chose to take a taxi. You arranged your taxi through the kiosk near the airport exit. You told them where you were going, they tell you the price up front, you pay, and they direct you to your taxi driver.

Where To Stay

Sayulita offers an abundance of boutique hotels and hostels throughout town. Sayulita is small so most accommodations will be within quick walking distance of the most popular attractions and best nightlife.

There are so many options, but a few of my favorites are Ximena Hotel Boutique and Amor Boutique Hotel.

What Does It Cost To Travel To Sayulita?

Once you’ve paid for your flight and taxi into Sayulita the average meal is $7 – $12/ plate and a beer will only set you back a few bucks.

With a wide variety of lodging available you’re very likely to find something within your budget. Boutique hotels average around $80 – 100 per night with hostels about half the price. 

Excursions vary but are usually about $75 – 100 per person for each excursion, of course this depends on exactly what you do.

When To Visit Sayulita

The best time of year to visit Sayulita and winter and spring, or December through May. The weather is perfect this time of year, with highs sitting in the mid 80°F’s and chances of rain low.

Is Sayulita Worth Visiting?

Sayulita is in an excellent location, situated on the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by jungle. Since it isn’t as well known as say, Puerto Vallarta, or as luxurious as Punta Mita, you’ll find charm that neither of the latter offers, not to mention better deals. This is a perfect vacation destination if you wish to experience a different side of Mexico and is especially great if you enjoy adventure and activities.
