Cabo San Lucas

Located at the far tip of the Baja California peninsula is the much-loved Mexico getaway, Cabo San Lucas.

Surrounded by water, its famed for gorgeous, sunny beaches and distinctive rocky coastline, in addition to delicious restaurants, lively nightlife, and ample resorts.

The whale watching is also incredible this time of year.

Thanks to fabulous year-round weather and close proximity to the United States’ West Coast, this spot makes for one of the best winter vacations.

Things To Do In Cabo San Lucas

• See the famous Rock Arch (El Arco) just off shore. 
• Watch for ample Humpback whales who mate and birth in Cabo during the winter months.
• Spend the day sampling tacos and tequila. 

Mexico City

The country’s capital city is a must-see if vacationing in Mexico during winter.

Located in the south-central region, this is not only the country’s most densely populated city but one of the largest in the world. 

It’s known for deep history — the city was founded in 1325! — seemingly countless UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and excellent museums. Plus, of course, delicious cuisine and fun nightlife. 

With tons of direct flights from various US cities, a vacation to Mexico City is easier than ever.

• Visit the Frida Kahlo Museum or enjoy the city’s endless entertainment options.
• Explore ancient Aztec ruins.
• See Xochimilco, nicknamed Little Venice, for its canal system dotted with colorful gondola-esque boats. 

Michoacán

Just a short distance from Mexico City is the state of Michoacan, where you’ll find the incredible monarch butterfly migration. 

Each winter the butterflies hibernate in this small region after flying thousands of miles from around Canada and the United States. They then return north for summer, making them the only known butterfly to migrate both directions in one year.

Millions of butterflies can be found huddled together, completely engulfing the trees of the Sierra Madre Mountains.

The butterflies stay in Mexico from about November through mid-March.

There are various sanctuaries around Michoacán where you can observe the remarkable spectacle.

My friends and I visited in December, just before the holidays, and had an incredible time exploring the beaches and surrounding areas. The jungle ATV tour with tequila tasting was a highlight for sure.

The region has a hot, dry Mediterranean-like climate with a persistent salty breeze from the nearby Pacific Ocean. The result is a mix of classic varietals and distinctive blends.

Instagram-worthy vineyard views, incredible food, and delicious wines are all things you’ll find in Valle de Guadalupe during your winter visit to Mexico.

Holbox Island

The incredible Holbox Island, sitting between the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico, is the perfect Mexico winter vacation.

The car-free, tropical island is surrounded by jaw-dropping turquoise water, rich in marine and animal life. It sees everything from sea turtles and whale sharks, to flamingos and pelicans.

Tourists, locals, and wildlife all love the shallow waters and wide beaches of Isla Holbox.

Cancun

The hub of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula has more entertainment options and resorts than I could begin to count up.

This was the first place I ever visited in Mexico. I remember being wowed by the bright blue water and seemingly endless rows of bars cranking out loud music. All of this packed onto a tiny beachfront strip with huge resort towers, too.

While the entertainment options here lend themselves more to college spring breakers, Cancun is still one of the most popular destinations in Mexico even during winter.

Puerto Escondido

This is another Mexico destination I had the honor of visiting with friends a few Decembers back. Some of the trip highlights included exploring gorgeous Islas Marietas National Park by day, and bouncing from sandy beach bar to sandy beach bar by night.

Zihuatanejo

Head south from Sayulita for about 700 km (roughly 400 miles) and you’ll land in the fishing village turned resort town, Zihuatanejo.

The name may be intimidating, just call it Zihua, however the town is anything but.

If you’re looking for all the draws of Mexico — beautiful beaches, tacos, beach bars — but without all the tourists, head to Zihuatanejo this winter.

What Is Winter Weather Like In Mexico?

For starters, Mexico is massive, it’s the 13th largest country in the world by area.

Having said that, most of the country experiences mild winters with low humidity, limited rain, and lots of sunny days.

Of course, weather will vary in different regions, but there’s a really good chance you’ll find yourself soaking up the sun in shorts during a winter visit to Mexico.

For example, Mexico City, located in the center of the country, at a high elevation, still has average temperatures in the 70°F’s (21°C) during winter.
