Winter Day Trip To Breckenridge, Colorado (My Itinerary & Tips For Your Visit!)

Planning a day trip to the mountains? One of the best things about living in Denver is how easy it is to escape to the mountains on a whim. And that’s exactly what I did this week — just packed up for the day and headed to Breckenridge, one of Colorado’s most charming and accessible mountain towns.

If you’re thinking about making the trip, whether you’re a local or visiting the state, here’s how I spent a day in winter and a few tips to help you plan your own.

Getting To Breckenridge

I hit the road in the morning for the roughly 1.5-hour drive to Breckenridge. If you’re coming from Denver, it’s a scenic drive up I-70 with plenty of great views along the way. I’d recommend leaving before 9 am to avoid the bulk of traffic and to find parking (weekend visitors, you’ll need to leave even earlier).

Additionally, make sure to check road conditions before you go, even in spring, as mountain weather can be unpredictable. It may be a nice day in Denver while there’s a snowstorm in Breck. The National Weather Service and Colorado Department of Transportation and Go I-70 are my go-to’s for weather and road information.

Finally, be prepared for traffic on the your return to Denver. Traffic is possible any day during ski season, but Sunday afternoons/evenings are notoriously bad.

Parking In Breckenridge & Getting Around

Parking

Airport Road Lot is a popular free parking area located just outside the town center. From here, you can hop on the free shuttle to reach downtown and the ski resort. This is my preferred lot in peak season, it’s a very convenient option, but it will fill up on busy winter/spring days.

Additionally, there are numerous gondola lots and parking garages closer to town for a fee, rates vary but plan for about $30+ per day.

For guaranteed parking, consider reserving a spot in advance through the Reserve ‘N Ski program.

Getting Around

Breck is easy to get around by foot, but if you’re heading a bit further out, the Breck Free Ride Bus System is the way to go. It’s completely free and very easy to use. Check out their schedules at Breck Free Ride.

Breckenridge Day Trip Itinerary In Winter

Isak Heartstone

During this day trip, my first stop in town was to visit Isak Heartstone, the beloved 15-foot wooden troll tucked away just outside of downtown. I’ve been to Breck plenty of times, but somehow had never made it out to see him until this visit — I now understand why people love him so much.

Isak is made entirely from reclaimed wood and was created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo for the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts (BIFA) in 2019. Meant to be a temporary display, he was so beloved that the town quickly found him a permanent home.

The short walk to reach him (via the Trollstigen Trail) takes less than 5 minutes and is super easy to navigate. It’s a fun, quick stop for anyone who loves public art and a little bit of whimsy.

Be sure to bring spikes, the trail will be snowy and icy during winter and through late spring.

There is a Breck Free Ride bus stop right by the trailhead as well as a small parking lot.

Coffee & Lunch

After my troll encounter, I made my way to downtown Breckenridge, first order of business: food and caffeine.

I stopped by Semplice Cafe, a cute walk-up cafe serving take out food from a historic mining-era building, it’s perfect for a casual bite. I ordered a vegan wrap and had a little picnic at the Blue River Plaza.

Note: If you’d rather have a sit down lunch, there are plenty of options throughout downtown.

Walk The Shops On Historic Main Street

After refueling, I took my time strolling up and down Main Street.

Breckenridge has one of the largest shopping areas of any Colorado mountain town. You’ll find everything from boutiques and bookstores to outdoor gear shops and souvenir stands, most of which are tucked into colorful 19th century buildings.

The historic district’s core runs along Main Street, roughly from Watson Avenue through Maggie Pond (Peak 8 through Peak 9). It’s worth meandering off Main Street too, the town has a lot of hidden gems throughout the entire historic district.

Gondola Ride: BreckConnect Gondola & Après Ski

In the afternoon I headed up the BreckConnect Gondola to meet with friends who had spent the morning snowboarding.

(Yes, non-skiers can ride the gondola too, and it’s free. Free gondolas are not the norm in Colorado resort towns, so this definitely something to take advantage of, it’s a very unique experience!)

The gondola has a few stops, but you’ll want to wait for Peak 8, this is the hub of Breckenridge Mountain. At the Peak 8 base area, 9,950 feet above sea level, we enjoyed food, drinks, and all the ski vibes from TBar. It was fun to hang out with friends and watch skiers coming down the mountain.

Tip: If riding the gondola as a non-skier, wear proper shoes, you’ll be walking in snow. And once you’ve exited the gondola, be aware of your surroundings, it’s important to stay out of the way of those on the ski hills.

If you want to skip the gondola, there are plenty of places to après in town as well. The Maggie sits at the base of Peak 9, centrally located in town, here you can watch skiers here while having a drink. Or check out spots downtown like RMU, Napper Tandy’s Irish Pub, The Gold Pan Saloon, The Blue Stag Saloon, and lots more.
