Hidden in the forest just outside downtown Breckenridge, the Breckenridge Troll — officially named Isak Heartstone — is one of Colorado’s most beloved art installations.

Built by Danish artist Thomas Dambo using reclaimed wood, Isak has become a local legend and a must-see for visitors of all ages.

How To Get There

Isak is located on the Trollstigen Trail, about one mile from downtown Breckenridge and just a short walk from the Stephen C. West Ice Arena. Here’s how to find him:

Address: Illinois Creek Trailhead (the troll has no official street address)
Public Transit: Breckenridge’s free town bus, the Breck Free Ride, makes visiting the Troll easy without a car. Hop on either the Gray Route South or the Main Street Trolley — both stop at the “Ice Rink” stop at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena. From there, it’s a short walk to the Trollstigen Trailhead (Illinois Creek Trailhead).
Parking: Free parking is available at the Ice Arena lot. From there, you’ll see clear signs pointing toward the Trollstigen Trail.
Trail length: About 0.25 miles round trip — an easy, well-maintained path suitable for all ages and fitness levels.
Time needed: Plan about 15 – 30 minutes total to walk, take photos, and enjoy the sculpture.

The trail is open year-round, but conditions vary with the seasons. In winter and spring, expect snow and ice — microspikes are highly recommended, as this shaded trail receives little direct sun.

In summer and early fall, you won’t need hiking boots — comfortable sneakers are perfect for the short, scenic stroll.

What To Expect

Look for the Illinois Creek Trailhead (Trollstigen Trailhead) in the southeast corner of the Stephen C. West Ice Arena parking lot — there are clear signs pointing toward the Troll.

From here, a short, wooded path leads you straight to Isak. Soon, you’ll spot him peeking through the trees: a giant troll sitting contently against the pine-covered hillside. Up close, his intricate details are incredible — wooden planks layered like scales, a friendly face crafted from recycled timber, and a heart-shaped stone resting in his chest.

A small area is designated for photos, which can get crowded during peak hours. It’s common for a line to form for a picture with Isak, so patience is key. Visitors who come early or later in the day are more likely to enjoy a quiet moment with the Troll.

Regardless of when you visit, everyone is encouraged to admire Isak respectfully. Please don’t climb on the sculpture — it’s made of natural, fragile materials and designed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings.

On your way back, you’ll follow a short boardwalk along a gentle creek. Near the trailhead, you’ll find a few picnic benches tucked among the trees.

Tips For Visiting

Go early or on weekdays to avoid crowds, especially during summer and ski season.
Dogs are welcome on leash only.
Winter and spring visitors: Expect an icy, snow-covered trail. Microspikes are recommended.
Bathrooms: Yes! Regularly maintained porta-potties are available at the trailhead.
Trailhead naming: The Illinois Creek Trailhead and Trollstigen Trailhead are used interchangeably, but Illinois Creek Trailhead is what appears on Google Maps.
Leave no trace — help preserve the natural area by staying on the path and never climbing the Troll.

Who Is Isak Heartstone?

Isak Heartstone first appeared in 2018 as part of the Breckenridge International Festival of Arts.

The sculpture — crafted entirely from recycled materials — was originally built in a residential area, but his popularity caused crowding issues, so he was carefully relocated to a new home in the woods near the Illinois Creek Trailhead.

Today, he rests peacefully among the trees, surrounded by mountain views and fresh alpine air, welcoming visitors from around the world.
