The Best Summer Things To Do In Breckenridge, Colorado 

Breckenridge is one of Colorado’s most popular mountain towns, and summer is a fantastic time to visit. While many people associate Breckenridge with skiing, the warmer months bring plenty of attractions from hiking trails, mountain biking, festivals, museums, and scenic drives.

It’s easy to find a variety of things to do here, you can spend the morning hiking to an alpine lake, wander through the historic district in the afternoon, and finish the day with live music or a great meal downtown.

Here are the best summer things to do in Breckenridge, Colorado.

Things To Do In Breckenridge In Summer

Explore Main Street & The Breckenridge Historic District 

Main Street is the heart of Breckenridge and easily one of the best downtown areas in any Colorado mountain town. The large historic district is filled with colorful Victorian-era buildings that date back to the town’s mining days, many of which now house restaurants, coffee shops, boutiques, and art galleries.

One of the best things to do here is just wander. Breck’s downtown area is larger than most Colorado mountain towns, and there are plenty of shops and attractions tucked along the side streets as well as Main Street itself. Whether you’re grabbing a coffee, browsing local stores, or stopping for lunch, it’s easy to spend a few hours exploring.

Gondola Ride: BreckConnect Gondola

The BreckConnect Gondola is one of the most popular attractions in Breckenridge and one you should definitely add to your list. This free gondola connects downtown Breckenridge with Peaks 7 and 8 at Breckenridge Ski Resort, providing great views and easy access to the mountain.

Even in summer, it’s worth taking a ride. The gondola offers a unique perspective of the surrounding mountains and passes over Cucumber Gulch Preserve, where you can sometimes spot wildlife (keep an eye out for moose!). If you’d like, get off at Peak 8, where you can grab a drink, enjoy the scenery, or check out the Epic Discovery Center (we’ll talk more about the latter in a bit). Grabbing a drink up here and watching people enjoy the mountain is genuinely one of my favorite things to do in Breckenridge in summer.

Best of all, you don’t need a lift ticket or reservation to ride. You can simply take the gondola up, enjoy the views, and ride back down to town. A free gondola is actually pretty rare in Colorado mountain towns, so definitely take advantage of this.

Farmers Market

If you’re visiting during summer, Breckenridge’s farmers markets are worth checking out. They offer a great mix of local produce, food vendors, handmade goods, artwork, and Colorado-made products, while also providing a chance to experience a more local side of town.

Breckenridge typically hosts a large Sunday market at Main Street Station during the summer months, along with a Thursday market that focuses more heavily on local food and agricultural vendors. Both are fun to browse, whether you’re shopping for snacks, looking for souvenirs, or simply enjoying the atmosphere.

Hiking

Hiking is another one of the best things to do in Breckenridge during summer. The area is home to a extensive trail networks ranging from short family-friendly walks to challenging alpine hikes. Of course you’ll find great mountain views, but you may also see stunning wildflowers, waterfalls, mining ruins, and beautiful alpine lakes, too.

Popular hikes include Sawmill Reservoir, McCullough Gulch, Mohawk Lakes, and Quandary Peak, though there are dozens of other trails throughout the area. Summer wildflowers are especially impressive from roughly July into August, when many trails are lined with colorful blooms.

Because of Breckenridge’s high elevation, it’s important to start hikes early and keep an eye on the weather forecast. Afternoon thunderstorms are common during summer, and can be very dangerous at high altitudes, particularly above the tree line. Popular trailheads also fill early on weekends, so arriving early is your best bet.

Biking

Breckenridge is one of Colorado’s top summer biking destinations, with options ranging from paved recreation paths to challenging mountain bike trails. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely ride or a more adventurous outing, there are plenty of options nearby.

One of the most popular routes is the Blue River Recpath, a paved multi-use trail that connects Breckenridge with Frisco, Dillon, and Silverthorne. It’s a great choice for casual riders and visitors who want to enjoy the scenery without tackling technical terrain.

For mountain bikers, Breckenridge offers an extensive network of trails that wind through forests, wildflower-filled meadows, and high-alpine landscapes. Summer wildflowers are especially impressive in July and August, making this one of the most beautiful times of year to ride.

See Isak Heartstone, The Breckenridge Troll

Isak Heartstone has become one of Breckenridge’s most recognizable attractions. Created by Danish artist Thomas Dambo using reclaimed wood, this 15-foot-tall troll sits tucked away in the forest just outside downtown and has become a favorite stop for both visitors and locals.

The short trail is family-friendly and doesn’t require a huge time commitment, but still gets you out into the beautiful mountain scenery that makes Breckenridge so special.

Because of its popularity, expect to share the trail with other visitors, especially during weekends. Personally, I try to get here early before the crowds arrive.

Epic Discovery Park at Breckenridge Ski Resort

Most people associate Breckenridge Ski Resort with winter, but the mountain stays busy during summer thanks to Epic Discovery. Located at Peak 8, this family-friendly attraction offers a variety of outdoor activities.

Popular attractions include the Gold Runner Alpine Coaster, scenic chairlift rides, climbing features, and various family-oriented activities. It’s especially popular with families traveling with children, though adults can certainly enjoy many of the attractions as well (I love an alpine coaster and scenic chair lift ride!).

Activity offerings and operating schedules can vary slightly throughout the season, so it’s worth checking current information before your visit: Breck Epic Discovery.

Kayak Or Stand-Up Paddleboard

Getting out on the water is another one of my favorite summer activities in Breckenridge. One of the easiest options is Maggie Pond, located near downtown, where seasonal rentals make it easy to spend an hour or two paddleboarding.

For larger bodies of water, nearby Lake Dillon is one of the most popular places for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding in Summit County. If you plan to paddle here, mornings are usually best. Winds often increase throughout the day, creating much choppier conditions by afternoon.

More adventurous visitors may also enjoy paddling on alpine lakes around the Breckenridge area. Reaching these lakes requires hiking and carrying your gear, but the reward is a much quieter and more unique experience surrounded by mountain scenery.

Grab Coffee

Breckenridge has some fantastic coffee shops, so grabbing a coffee before exploring town is one of the best ways to start the day in my opinion.

You’ll find everything from cozy cafes and bakeries to quick grab-and-go options throughout the historic district. Some favorites include Clint’s Bakery & Coffee House and Semplice Cafe, both of which are conveniently located downtown.

Even if you’re not a huge coffee drinker, these cafes make great places to relax for a bit, grab breakfast, or take a break between activities.

Mine Tour

Long before Breckenridge became a ski destination, it was a mining town. Learning about that history is one of the best ways to better understand the area, and summer is a great time to visit some of the town’s historic mining sites.

Country Boy Mine Tour

Country Boy Mine is one of the most popular historic attractions in Breckenridge. Visitors can take guided tours through a historic mine, learn about local mining history, and even try their hand at gold panning.

The tours are informative without feeling overly technical, making them a good fit for both adults and families. It’s one of the more unique attractions in town and offers a nice change of pace from hiking and other outdoor activities.

Lomax Placer Mine & Gold Panning

Located near downtown, Lomax Placer Mine offers another opportunity to learn about Breckenridge’s mining history. The site includes historic equipment, interpretive displays, and seasonal gold panning demonstrations.

Because of its convenient location and shorter visit time, it’s easy to add onto a day spent exploring the historic district.

Visit A Museum

If you’re interested in Breck’s history, don’t overlook the town’s museums.

Most are free, easy to visit, and located right in or near the historic district. The Breckenridge Welcome Center & Museum, Edwin Carter Discovery Center, Breckenridge Sawmill Museum, Red, White & Blue Fire Museum, and Barney Ford House Museum are all worth considering.

They don’t require a huge time commitment and most are free, but you can still learn quite a bit about the town’s mining history, local culture, and the people who helped shape Breckenridge into what it is today.

Walking Tour Of Breckenridge

If you’re especially interested in Breck’s history, a walking tour can be a great addition to your visit. Several organizations offer guided tours focused on topics like mining history, historic buildings, local legends, and the people who helped build the town.

Even if you’ve already visited a museum, a walking tour provides additional context while allowing you to see many of Breckenridge’s historic buildings up close.

The Historical Walking Tour, Ghostly Tales, and Hike The Golden Horseshoe (mining tour) are favorites.

Summer Concerts at the Riverwalk Center

If you’re looking for something to do in the evening, check out the concerts at the Riverwalk Center. Located just steps from Main Street, this popular performance venue hosts a variety of concerts and events throughout the summer. They also host smaller pop-up events (Airstage Summer Après) directly in town too.

Musical styles vary from year to year but often include everything from classical performances and folk music to contemporary artists and touring acts. The The National Repertory Orchestra even puts on a number of concerts through the summer. Many shows take place in the evening, making them an easy addition to a day spent exploring Breckenridge.

Nightlife & Additional Live Music

Breckenridge has one of the better nightlife scenes among Colorado mountain towns. While it isn’t known for huge clubs or anything like that, you’ll still find plenty of bars, breweries, live music venues, and restaurants that stay lively well into the evening.

Many of the best nightlife options are concentrated around Main Street, making it easy to walk between venues and see what catches your attention.

You’ll find that Breck’s fun après reputation holds up year-round.

Summer Events In Breckenridge

Summer is one of the liveliest times of year in Breckenridge, with festivals and special events taking place throughout the season. From food and wine events to art festivals and holiday celebrations, there’s often something happening around town. It’s definitely worth checking if anything’s going on during your visit.

Some of the most popular summer events include:

• Pride Events (held throughout June) 
• Breckenridge Agave Festival (typically held in late June)
• Independence Day Celebration (4th of July, with additional events leading up to the 4th)
• Breckenridge Food & Wine Festival (typically held in late July)
• Main Street Art Festival (typically held in early August)
• Breckenridge Wine Classic (typically held in late August)
• Breckenridge International Festival of Arts (typically held in late August)

Go For A Scenic Drive

Breckenridge is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, and a scenic drive can be a great way to experience the area beyond downtown.

One of the best options is Boreas Pass Road, a historic route that follows portions of an old railroad grade between Breckenridge and Como. The road offers mountain views, historic railroad remnants, and wildflowers in summer.

Another worthwhile stop is Hoosier Pass, located just south of town along Highway 9. At over 11,500 feet, the pass provides impressive mountain views with very little effort, making it an easy addition to your trip.

Golf

Golfing in Breckenridge is a little different than golfing at lower elevations. Surrounded by mountain scenery and sitting at over 9,000 feet above sea level, the area’s courses offer a pretty outstanding backdrop, not to mention, frequent wildlife visits.

The Breckenridge Golf Club is the area’s most well-known public courses and features 27 holes designed by Jack Nicklaus.

Visit A Local Brewery

Colorado has a strong craft beer culture and Breck is no exception, making a brewery visit a perfect addition to your itinerary after a day of hiking, biking, or exploring downtown.

Broken Compass Brewing is a longtime local favorite known for its laid-back atmosphere and rotating beer selection. Breckenridge Brewery is another well-known name that’s popular with visitors.

Go For A Distillery Tour

If spirits are more your style, consider visiting Breckenridge Distillery. Known for its award-winning whiskey, this is one of the most recognizable distilleries in Colorado and a popular stop for visitors.

The distillery offers tours and tastings that provide a behind-the-scenes look at the production process while introducing guests to a variety of spirits.

Reservations are recommended during busy summer weekends.

Backstage Theatre

For something a little different, consider catching a performance at Backstage Theatre. This local theater company presents a variety of productions throughout the year, including plays, musicals, and other live performances.

While Breckenridge is best known for outdoor recreation, attractions like Backstage Theatre help showcase another side of the community and provide a great option when you’re looking for an evening activity.

Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a classic Colorado summer activity and an unforgettable way to experience the mountains around Breckenridge.

Several local outfitters offer guided rides through forests, mountain meadows, and historic backcountry areas. Depending on the ride you choose, you may see wildflowers, mining remnants, wildlife, and expansive mountain views along the way.

Many rides are beginner-friendly, making this a good option even for visitors with little or no horseback riding experience. Summer tours can fill quickly, so reservations are recommended.

Join An Art Class

Breckenridge has a surprisingly strong arts community, and joining an art class can be a fun way to spend a few hours during your visit. Whether you’re looking for a break from outdoor activities or simply want to take home a unique souvenir, there are classes available for a variety of interests and skill levels.

Many workshops are offered through Breck Create, a local arts organization that hosts classes, exhibitions, and events throughout the year. Lake Dillon 

Lake Dillon is one of the most beautiful recreation areas in Summit County and it’s only a few minutes from Breck. You can simply drive or walk around the lake or spend some time on the water.

One of the most popular activities is taking a boat tour or sailing excursion, which provides a unique perspective of the surrounding mountains. There are also walking and biking paths around portions of the lake, several marinas, picnic areas, and waterfront restaurants nearby. Kayaking, stand up paddleboarding, and fishing are also popular here.

Fly Fishing

Colorado is known for its fly fishing, and Breckenridge is no exception. The Blue River and other nearby waterways provide excellent opportunities for anglers ranging from complete beginners to experienced fly fishers.

If you’ve never tried fly fishing before, guided trips are widely available and can be a great introduction to the sport. Local guides provide equipment, instruction, and help finding productive fishing spots.

Spa Day

After several days of hiking, biking, and exploring, a spa day can be a welcome change of pace. Several resorts and local businesses around Breckenridge offer spa services ranging from massages and facials to full wellness treatments.

Whether you’re looking to recover after a long hike or simply want a more relaxing afternoon, a spa visit can be a nice way to balance some of the more active experiences on this list.

Hot Springs

While Breckenridge doesn’t have any hot springs in town itself, there are several excellent options within driving distance.

If you’re planning a longer stay in the area, a hot springs visit can make for a fun day trip or a relaxing stop on your drive to or from Breckenridge.

White Water Rafting

While there isn’t any white water rafting directly in Breckenridge, several popular rafting destinations are located within easy driving distance, making this a great summer day trip option.

Most rafting trips take place on the Arkansas River near Buena Vista, which is reachable from Breckenridge in just over an hour. The Arkansas is one of Colorado’s most popular rafting rivers and offers everything from beginner-friendly float trips to more challenging white water adventures.

If you’re looking to add a little adrenaline to your Breckenridge vacation, this is one of the best ways to do it.

Day Trips From Breckenridge 

One of the advantages of staying in Breckenridge is its central location. Several of Colorado’s most popular mountain destinations are located within a relatively short drive, making it easy to explore beyond town if you have extra time.

Popular day trips include Frisco, Dillon, Silverthorne, Leadville, Glenwood Springs, and Vail. Each offers its own personality and attractions, from historic downtowns and scenic lakes to hiking trails, shopping, and mountain views. Best of all, these day trips are dramatically easier in summer when you don’t have snowstorms and ski traffic to contend with.
