The Best Day Trips From Ouray, Colorado 

Ouray is a gorgeous town in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. It’s located near two national parks, multiple national forests and national recreation areas, and is within close proximity of other beloved mountain towns, like Silverton and Telluride.

I’ve lived in Colorado most of my life and can’t get enough of this corner of the state, there’s so much to see! 

Ouray makes for a great base in the region. While there’s tons to do in Ouray itself, like visiting Box Canyon Falls Park, Ouray Ice Park, and hiking the Perimetermontrose Trail, those with extended time here should absolutely consider a day trip or two during their visit. 

Below are some of the best day trips from Ouray, Colorado.

The Best Day Trips From Ouray, Colorado

Ridgway 

Distance From Ouray: 15 minutes (10 miles)

Nicknamed the ‘Gateway to the San Juan Mountains’, Ridgway is a base camp to the towering peaks that lie thousands of feet above. A stop here is essential if visiting Ouray, there’s so much to do and it’s just a short drive away. 

Relaxing at Orvis Hot Springs, browsing the shops downtown, and enjoying water activities like boating and swimming at Ridgway State Park are my favorite activities here.

Silverton 

Distance From Ouray: 45 minutes (23 miles)

Silverton is located in a remote valley surrounded by 13 and 14,000 foot peaks. There’s only one paved road in and out, US 550, and it’s not for the faint of heart due to steep drop-offs with no guardrails. Silverton is worth the effort though, the entire town is designated a National Historic Landmark thanks to its well-preserved mining era buildings and remnants. 

Summer visitors will love the town’s hiking opportunities, mine tours, and 4×4 adventures. Winter visitors can enjoy heli-skiing and lift access backcountry skiing at Silverton Mountain and Kendall Mountain ski resorts. Be warned though, these are some of the most challenging ski resorts in Colorado.

Black Canyon Of The Gunnison National Park 

Distance From Ouray: 1 hour (45 miles)

Black Canyon of the Gunnison is one of Colorado’s four national parks. This is among the deepest, steepest, and most narrow canyons in the United States. It’s so narrow in fact, that parts of the canyon floor only see a few minutes of sunlight per day, giving the valley its name: Black Canyon.

In summer, visitors can enjoy a multitude of jaw-dropping viewpoints from Rim Drive Road and even hike into the canyon (permits required for the latter). No matter the season, Black Canyon is quiet considering its national park status, but particularly so in winter. If visiting in the cold weather months, plan to check out the few viewpoints that remain open year-round and snowshoe above the canyon rim.

Telluride 

Distance From Ouray: 1 hour, 5 minutes (50 miles)

Telluride is easily one of the most beautiful mountain towns in Colorado. This stunning destination is tucked into a picturesque box canyon, surrounded by towering peaks. It’s home to upscale dining opportunities, boutique shopping, and ample outdoor activities.

Summer visitors can see the incredible Bridal Veil Falls, go hiking, and browse the shops along Colorado Ave. During winter the town is most known for excellent skiing at Telluride Ski Resort, plus fun winter activities like dog sledding and ice skating. No matter the time of year, be sure to stop by Telluride Brewing Company for a local craft beer.

Durango 

Distance From Ouray: 1 hour, 45 minutes (70 miles)

Durango is by far the largest city in the region. It’s got a traditional mountain town feel with quick access to hiking trails and excellent whitewater rafting, but it’s also got tons of restaurants and breweries. Not to mention, some really great annual events like the Durango Farmers Market, Animas City Night Bazaar, and multiple summer concert series.

Among the town’s most famous attractions is the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway, which runs year-round, but is most popular in summer and again during the holidays when they run their iconic Polar Express route.

Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway

Distance From Ouray: 1 hour, 45 minutes (70 miles)

As mentioned above, one of the region’s most iconic attractions is the Durango Silverton Train. So much so, it’s deserving of its own spot on this list of day trips from Ouray. 

This bucket list-worthy trip takes you on a historic steam train along the winding Animas River while overlooking San Juan National Forest.

The ride departs Durango and then stops in the tiny mining town of Silverton, where you can shop, dine, and take in the sights.

This tour takes a full day but is definitely worth it. However, if you’re low on time, there’s also a half-day option which runs from Durango to Cascade Canyon and back.

Mesa Verde National Park 

Distance From Ouray: 2 hours, 20 minutes (105 miles)

This unique national park is well worth the trek from Ouray. Mesa Verde National Park is comprised of ancient Puebloan cliff dwellings and archeological sites dating back to 550 AD. This is not only a national park, but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest archaeological preserve in the United States.

Most park sites can only be viewed from a distance unless you join a ranger-led tour, which I highly recommend! The tours are immersive and unique, providing a glimpse into the lives of the ancient Pueblo people.

Park tours are most readily available in the warmer months.

Lake City  

Distance From Ouray: 2 hours, 35 minutes (118 miles) via highway. 

Wildlife, waterways, and the wonder of beautiful landscapes make Lake City a must-see destination. While quite remote, this alpine oasis has a rich history based in mining and railroading. Adventure seekers should look no further.

Summer visitors will enjoy fishing and other water activities on Pete’s Lake, hiking, and 4x4ing here. Winter is pretty quiet in Lake City, but there’s still plenty to do, like ice climbing, ice fishing, and snowshoeing.

Gunnison

Distance From Ouray: 2 hours, 50 minutes (150 miles)

Gunnison is a well-rounded town in this area of Colorado, known for numerous outdoor activities, but also festivals, farmers markets, and a fun downtown area. Gunnison also boasts Western Colorado University and is a stone’s throw away from Crested Butte. Don’t miss the bike-themed, strong-coffee-serving cafe, Double Shot Cyclery, and the many great restaurants in town.

Thanks to Gunnison’s relatively large size, there’s lots to do here year-round. In summer, plan to hike in Gunnison National Forest, bike Hartman Rocks, browse the shops downtown, or check out a festival. Nature lovers especially need to check out the beautiful Curecanti National Recreation Area. Winter visitors, plan to ski Monarch Mountain, snowshoe, or browse a local museum.

Palisade

Distance From Ouray: 2 hours, 10 minutes (100 miles)

Summer sun, peaches, and ample wine, Palisade is a unique getaway standing apart from the other adventure hubs of the San Juan Mountains. The quaint agricultural town emotes a calmer, more refined attitude. 

Biking between vineyards is definitely the favorite pastime in Palisade, but the small town also hosts numerous events and is famous for its peaches (and all things peach-related)! Summer is quite hot, fall through spring is best here.

Montrose 

Distance From Ouray: 50 minutes (35 miles)

Montrose’s rich history as both a railroading and agricultural hub have created a thriving town that boasts incredible outdoor activities and recreation.

During summer in Montrose, visit the Montrose Farmers Market, hike, or go golfing. Of course, you’ll also want to visit Montrose’s neighboring national park, Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Winter visitors will enjoy snowshoeing and browsing the town’s museums and galleries.

Colorado National Monument

Distance From Ouray: 2 hours, 30 minutes (110 miles)

Near Grand Junction, the Colorado National Monuments or ‘mini Grand Canyon’ presents some of the most incredible natural rock formations in the state. It’s known specifically for towering red rock spires, unique geologic features, wildlife, and spectacular landscapes which are perfect for a scenic drive or quick hike.

Summer can get quite hot here, so the park is best explored in spring and fall. Additionally, winter can be really beautiful here, snow is sparse thanks to the area’s mild climate.

As you can see, there are some really incredible day trips from Ouray. Not only does the “Switzerland of America” have a ton to offer itself, but it makes a great base for exploring the region.
